Ok so someone wants a race and your at a light. Whats the best way to go about getting the edge off the line? How bad is it on your engine and transmission to put it in neutral and rev it up to like 2-3k then drop it into gear? I have done this in previous cars but not in my TGP for I am scared to do any damage. Also if you have tried this does the car have safeties to prevent damage to the tranny if you do this?

Since i have never done this I  most of the time just smash on the gas. Do you think its better to ease on the gas through first then to just punch it, as sometimes it feals a little bogged down.

Thanks for your opinions!

Don't do the revving in neutral method unless you just don't give two shits about your car(that's for those $50 running beaters that you buy 8) ).  Most say to hold the brake and then run your RPM's up to a specified amount(~2,000) should suffice and then let off the brake when the light changes and stomp it if you have good tires and gain traction immediately..if you don't have really good tires, try feathering the gas a little off the line and then when you can mash it all the way down with little to no wheelspin, do so.  Some say it's quicker just to sit there and stomp the gas off the line though, either way, practice a few times on a backroad and you should be able to tell what the best method for you is.

I know when I ran my dads TGP at the track this past season, I would brake torque it to the highest RPM I could that the car would still sit there with, then when it was time to go, I would let off the brake and mash the gas as hard as I could.  Because of the cars lack of power at the time, and the low pressure in the tires, and the really good track prep, the car would take off and chirp the tires maybe once or twice.  This worked really well for me, and I pulled a few low 2.1 60' times and one 2.093 60'.  On the street with a lack of traction, it would be a little different, but I would brake torque (hold the brake and gas at the same time) it to 1800-2000rpms or so, and then when the light goes green let off the brake and slowly push your foot to the floor.  You want to take about 1 full second for your foot to hit the floor.  And with good tires on dry pavement, you should get a pretty good launch that way.

thanks guys.. Just curious.. wouldnt giving it gas and not having your car go anywhere hurt your car a bit also?

It builds up a lot of heat in the torque converter. DO NOT FLOOR IT WHILE HOLDING THE BRAKE!!! If anything, bring the engine up on the transmission, only giving it enough gas to get it to the point the rpms stop climbing and don't go past that. Also, don't do it for any longer than neccesary as the cooler can't dissipate the heat fast enough.

when i want to launch  i hold down the brake and slowly rev it to about 1700rpm which is where my torque converter locks up and anything over that my car actually creeps forward over top my brakes being floored! not because the brakes are bad either they are the best w body brakes i have ever felt its just that i have that much torque.....no dyno numbers yet but i hope to get some soon   anyway i let off the brake when its time to go and slowly push down the gas  like dbtk2 said it should take bout 1 second to reach WOT otherwise my tires wont hook up and i waste lots of time spinning.......i also want to get some better tires this summer to help me with my traction prob

as an aside.......anybody know any real good tires for about 120 each for our cars? i was lookin at dunlop sport 5000's ........or kumho ecsta 712's

when i ran my tgp at the track towards the end of last season i found it best to brake and get the RPMs up to about 3000 with about 23-24#'s in the front tires and i didn't get any wheel spin. Even sometimes up to 3500 would give me great stick off the line still.  My wheels aren't by anymeans good they aren't even the same brand all the way around. As for temp, it was very cold everytime i was there and I also had the fans run when i was in the line so it stayed below even normal opp temps the whole time.

It is not the temp of the engine that Chris A is talking about! The temp of the slipping transmission will build so violently and fast that you can literally cook a tranny on the line if you over due it. Unless you have a large aftermarket transmission cooler with a high CFM fan attached to it...it would be a very good idea to listen to Chris about power-breaking at high RPMs for any period of time... 8)

yeah, good point.  from yellow to green isn't that long tho and 3k isn't that high..... come to think of it though, i am having problems w/ the tranny soooo......
