A few people in the X-over thread asked about disabling the EGR valve, and I know it's possible and just took a quick look into the 5 speed .bin.  Please realize that this is me running through about 30 sec. of actual thought, the rest is just typing  :lol:  All input you have is greatly appreciated since I haven't actually tested any of this yet.  Here goes:

I believe by setting a few different parameters we can shutoff the EGR valve, there are a few preset cutoffs for it built into the chip.  Most of them are set for driveability emissions, but if you want it off, it'll be off.  Such as:
    IF MAP <= THIS DISABLE
    IF MAP >= THIS DISABLE
Setting both of these to the same value would effectively keep the EGR disabled, eh???  Now, I'm not saying it's not gonna trip an SES light.  That's where my plans are flawed, because I would rather do it, test it, then tell you how I did it, than going about it this way.  Hell, the easiest way is to just unplug the damn thing, but that would DEFINETLY turn on the light.  I'm just trying to figure out what all settings I'm gonna have to change to get the light to stay off.  I guess only time will tell since there are 27 primary parameters for the EGR alone, no telling what all else will be effected by the EGR not functioning as these other parameter think it should be.  I guess we shall see.  Damn tree huggin', dolphin humping, hippies.   :lol:

SOOOOO, discuss.

eclipse5302 (Jason) once mentioned something about disabling the EGR that concerned me.  here is a quote of his taken from the W-body forum:

Since the EGR is not in use during WOT, it really doesn't hamper performance.  On the other hand, it can help reduce cylinder temps considerably which helps prevent detonation, ping, knock, etc.

???  EGR is only for emissions right?  i would think that the engine would be fine without it, but then again i don't really know?

Yeah, I'm not concerned w/ it affecting driveability or anything else, the only thing I am worried about (and I won't know until I get into it) is, "am I gonna have to change 490 settings until the SES light doesn't come on?"   :x  I can shut it off no problem, I just want to keep the stupid light from coming on.

I think one way of disabling the EGR is to change the coolant temp enable value.  You set it higher than your engine would ever run, effectively diabling the EGR.  Now, I haven'y read much about disabling the EGR as I have no plan of ever doing it, but I've heard that it does lower in cylinder temps and it reduced the amount of NOx emissions.

Right, I was just using MAP as an example.  So, just by changing one const. we can eliminate the EGR w/o any other situations occuring.  That seems too easy.   :lol:

Now with the EGR disabled, Can a blockoff plate be used without tripping an SES light?

We have emissions testing here :evil:

Luckily though it's only a visual inspection for '95 and older vehicles(pre-OBDII).  They just check to make sure that your car has what's listed on the sticker in the engine bay.  The good thing is that they only look to see if the emission equipment is there, not if it's working.  Now, '95 and newer stuff then that's a differenct story.  They hook up to the diagnostic port and check for codes and such and the computer has to have gone through all the drive cycles in order for it to pass.  I'm glad that all my cars are '95 an older. :D   Well, at least for now...I'm looking to pick up a '99 Grand Prix GTX soon.   :twisted:  8)

Pre-OBDII tests in this state are NOT kind to cars.  They put the front wheels up on rollers (too bad they can't dyno it while they're at it  :shock: ), and take it up to 5K RPMs or so.  I cringe just watching the thing run that hard for 30 seconds.  Of course, they can't do that with the AWDs.  They have to give it the old fashioned tail pipe test.   :D

You think the after market cat alone would cut it as far as covering up the disabled EGR thing?  I plan on getting a complete after market exhaust work done fairly shortly.  Right after I decide what I'm going to do about the PMIII that I was just informed may be shot.   :evil:

Just got my TGP powered Z24 convertible going, although it looks like theres a big problem in the top end, will make another post later on about that... however, I think posting an "emissions" rom with disabled CEL's and stuff would be helpful, this way it's strictly for emmissions, and nothing else -- make the car run clean for the gov't, then swap it right back ;)
