RKE-Let's beat this horse to death

OK, first of all I DID use the search function but I found a  MINISCULE detail that is keeping me from going ahead.  I bought a few RKE fobs off of ebay, and I got 1 that is right, and one that is not (Hey, I only paid $5 waddaya want  :roll: )  I found one post that stated, "Keep hitting the buttons until it cycles the locks"  and one that states, "hit a button, the locks will cycle, then it's programmed"  IS IT GAURENTEED to be programmed on 1 key hit.  I grounded the connector and it cycles the locks twice and the trunk twice (Did this on both my Cutty (which I never DREAMED would have RKE) and my TGP, and it acts the exact same)  I got the TGP to program ONCE, and it would only pop the trunk, not the doors.  Also, it worked like 5 times, then wouldn't even do that anymore.  HOWEVER, it STILL would cycle the locks when grounding the terminal.  So... IF it cycles it's good?  Or MAYBE it's good?  Is it possible to cycle the locks and NOT be good?  I just wanna know for sure before I rip this thing apart and try to fix the module.  Could a bad battery in the FOB be creating these symptoms?  I will get a known good battery, but just wanted to lay all the mis-information/conflicting posts and get this figured out.   :wink:

I'd like the answer to this, too.  I copied and pasted this post I made off the W-Body forum:

I bought a FOB a little while back, but I'm not sure if it's the FOB that doesn't work (replaced the batteries to make sure), or the receiver. I have 3 receivers myself. Two don't do anything when I ground the wire in the back, and the original cycles through the doors and trunk release, but won't program the FOB for some reason.

I just bought a brand new FOB from eBay. Well....it's from a '96 company car, but it's the second set of keys to it, which were never used (he sent me the keys, and everything). Hopefully, that eliminates the possibility of the FOB being the issue. I went to program it, and now even the original receiver won't do anything when I ground it. A bit frustrating to say the least. If I could get a receiver that works for sure, it would help pinpoint what the problem is.

It could be a combination of both the PKE unit and the key FOB. If the locks cycle upon grounding the data wire, it's most likey the Key FOB. It's will either need new batteries or the IC chip needs to be reslodered on the PC Board. If the RKE unit does not cycle , then the solder on the RKE unit is bad and the IC Chip on the RKE PC Board need to be resoldered.

CAUTION! DO NOT RESOLDER ANY CONTACTS which are resistors, unless you know what you are doing. The high heat from the soldering iron will cause the resistors to fail!!!!

i have resoldered the IC chips in my RKE 4 times now.  the first 3 times i resoldered i simply heated the solder joints with my solder gun.  it would work for a month or two and stop working.  the last time i did it (about a month ago) i actually used a little bit of paste flux and the solder joints look much better now.  it's still working...hopefully it stays that way this time.

i think Shawn Lin actually resoldered everything, but i have only resoldered the two IC chips near the end of the board which seems to be the problem area on my RKE.  good luck.

You CAN resolder everything... But like I said .. You better know what you are doing.. If you use a LOW heat solder iron , then the resistors will be spared.

RKE is VERY hit and miss. IIRC, the fob MUST have the lock and unlock buttons on the top. If not, it most definitely won't work. Just because the locks cycle doesn't mean that the RKE receiver works. I've resoldered several, and only had a few work. 99% its the receiver, IF you are 110% you have the right fobs.

Yeah, if it's supposed to be the lock and unlock buttons at the top, then I have the right ones.  How about the receiver from an older blazer, would those be the same/work?  The fobs being sold with it look identicle (except the trunk button has a tailgate on it).
