Hey guys...

Tonight there is a cruise night in Bloomington/Normal IL, that I have been catching a lot of flack to go to.

I've sort of been hanging low with my car because it is so tempremental at this point, and it just seems like it hardly ever wants to run right.  But I'll still cruise around my town, and my neighboring town, and if I see a bunch of kids hanging in a parking lot, I'll spool up so they can hear it.

Well... I guess there's a kid with a Neon... that has a huge wing, CAI, catback exhaust, plus a header.  He's N/A, but apparently he's been talking all kinds of crap about myself AND my car.  He was 'positive' that my car was supercharged.  LOL.  He was telling one of my best friends this.

But the kid with the Neon, has a friend that has a first-gen DSM, that is bone stock... right down to the air filter.  I cant remember if it is a stick or auto, but I think it's an auto.  I met the kid about a month ago, when I was in my little brothers TDC 3.4.  The kid was really a good guy, but he's 16, and his car is stock.

Apparently, the kid in the Neon says that this DSM will smoke me.  He's setting up a race on a deserted airport road and everything.

Now I'm just wondering if I should go at all.  I want to run this kid, but I dont want to go and get embarassed.  I've got the K&N, and no muffs.  That's about as far as my car goes for mods.  I'll be removing my 200 lb snapon toolbox out of the trunk, as well as about 75lbs worth of sub/box/stereo stuff.

If he's stock... and I've got the mods I have... do you think I'll have a chance?  What is your experience?  BTW... this kid WILL be popping if anything does go down.  He was stock as all hell two weeks ago... but if he has anything done, I think I'll back down.   :(

Thanks guys,
Zach

I've driven them both and it will be a close race. I've heard of guys who have easiliy taken DSM's but they had more than you. A stock DSM auto has a fairly small turbo (maybe smaller than the TGP) however, it can rev to 6000 rpm easily. Its been a while since i've driven a stock TGP but its worth a shot. Besides this dumbass thinks your car is supercharged. Don't be chicken, races are won and lost, but racing is all the fun!

Chris

ps, don't take that too personally, just go out and have a good time. If the guy is an real ass then its not worth it. But if he's a car guy and has some class it will be ok.

two things that will lighten your car up and no one will know (and therefore not laugh at you) is 1. take out the spare tire in the trunk, 2. try to show up with a 1/4 of a tank of gas or less. Fuel has weight too. If he revs up and pops into first your going to have to too. Be sure to launch. Good luck

Haha.. I pulled up in my car, and all of a sudden the kid didnt want to run anymore.  :)  lmfao

But I did win a prize. (Best Pontiac)

Good kill...sorta...I guess.  That's what I hate about ricers.

Hey, don't be afraid, he's lighter and might win on that fact alone. But it all depends on the driver, a bad driver can make a car very slow. Practice your power brakes and lauch, this is where you can kill him. I lauch around 2500 rpms and kill people of the line. I have the chip, filter, and exhaust 2.5 no mufflers. good luck and eat some rice!!!! psidoff
This car is an addiction, it has its problems many problems but if you want something different that's quick, handles, looks good and is comfortable as hell nothing can beat a TGP.
90 Red TGP 14.802 at 92.85 mph. Now new 89 black TGP runs great only 400 bucks cant beat that. PSIDOFF

besides, if he has a 5-speed there is even more of a chance he doesn't know how to shift or launch.  i have had a 5-speed in my CS for about 3 months now and i'm just now getting the hang of launching and shifting for acceleration.  BTW, TGPilot, where do you launch?  i'm assuming you rev to get the turbo spooled up before launching?  i'm out of 1st by 25mph, then shift into second.  then shift into 3rd at about 40mph.  i shift into 4th at about 60, and don't get into 5th until almost 90.  this is only if i'm really gettin' on it.  i have a good feeling i can hit 115mph in 5th and i don't even have a turbo.  i got up to 108 (wasn't topped out) when my car had the 4T60 and i know the Getrag 282 is capable of quite a bit more than that.  i don't let the my n/a 3.1 see above 4500 RPM.  if i cruise at 75mph in 5th i'm sittin at about 2600-2700 RPM.  i'm interested in how a turbo 3.1/5-speed is different.

a N/A 3.1 w/Getrag 282 5-speed:  (the speedometer is spot-on)

racing mode:

1st - 0-25mph
2nd - 25-40mph
3rd - 40-60mph
4th - 60-90mph
5th - 90-?

normal driving:

1st - 0-20mph
2nd - 20-32mph
3rd - 32-50mph
4th - 50-70mph
5th - cruise set @ 75mph @ about 2650 RPM

I have never paid a lot of attention at my speeds for shift. I usually just listen to the engine and shift at 4000-4300RPM to stay with the torque. As far as a launch goes...2 seconds before the green, I will hold the RPM at 1900-2000, draw the clutch (not drop) and work the throttle in with the parking brake just caught too keep it from rolling. Street racing I don't worry about the parking brake cause the little shits in this town try to creep the line anyway. My speedo is 10MPH off showing slower than I am going. I will pay attention to my speeds next time I am slapping a Turbo DSM or a 5.0 Mustang around!

Black Pheonix

when guys you launch with an automatic do you hold down the brake and rev or rev in netrual and shift into gear?

The dsm will probably win, seeing as how it is almost 800lbs lighter and has the same hp- Also, the auto tranny in the dsm shifts better for racing, as they are more of a manual with auto shift(similar to Hondas). But either way, could be fun.

Just outta curiousity IDbeast, you said you only let the tgp go to 4300? My full boost isnt coming in untill nearly 3800, are you catching boost earlier? Or is my car just F$%^ED up?  Never owned one before.

TGPilot (I think that is who you were speaking of) is chipped, so his boost spools very fast.  He's probably at full boost by 2500/3000 RPM (can't remember off hand, but there is like NO turbo lag when chipped).  The T25 in the TGP is soo small it has no problem spooling quickly.  But, the factory chip makes the turbo spool slowly.

Of course, you may also be building boost slowly because of a cracked crossover pipe (common TGP problem).

And in repsonse to the post above about launching with an auto, I usually hold the car, in drive at about 1800 / 1900 (to get to the torque convertor lockup point, and the get the turbo spinning), and launch at green.  Anything more is just doing damage to the torque convertor/trans.  Not to mention, the chip can tell you are brake-torqing and will punish you!  :)
