Most likely the reciever is shot.. I have 2 TGP's and I have already replaced one of them, and the one I just got works sometimes, but when it's really warm or has been sitting in the sun, it won't work.  When it's cold it will work from 30 yds.  I'm gonna replace it sometime next year when I get the $$.  It's like $120 new from www.gmpartsdirect.com, but you could try soldering it to see if it will work for you.
