start up

My 1990 GTP doesn't start up right away, i usually have to hold the key for about 3 seconds before it starts up.  It turns over about 5 times before it starts.  Is this normal?

Also, after starting up (usually when cold).  I let it warm up for about 30 seconds and then when i go to take off, i press down on the gas petal and it boggs out and sometimes stalls, but it only does it for about a second or two and then once i get the rpm's up it runs fine.  Do I need to let it warm up more?

I have an auto trans.

You mean TGP? Trust me some of us are touchy about getting these two mixed up. Just to let you know.
As for your car I don't know what's normal. Mine starts different every time. Doesn't matter if it's cold or hot. So maybe we both have the same problem. If I figure it out I'll let you know. Or if someone else has ideas, feel free to help us out.

Mine too is eratic about how it starts, there seems to be absolutely no pattern. Some times it will hit almost before I turn the key, othertimes it seems to take two or three cranks or even a recrank. It has been this way through all the work I have done to it, and regardless of how long it has been sitting.

The one thing I can say, it always starts, and it never seems to not want to, some times it just is more anxious than others.

Maybe Chris or Waskie has some ideas, or one of the other gurus, as I am still learning on this car!

There are a couple of different issues with the slow starting.

1:  

The tgp uses two different methods of turning on the fuel pump. One is through the ECM, the other is a backup via the Oil Pump switch (sender all combined). If the car is taking a bit to start up, it could be because the ECM isn't turning on the pump. Therefore the car has to build oil pressure to close the switch and turn on the pump. This can happen for a few reasons.

2: Bad injectors. While sitting the injectors can leak down, and flood the engine with gas. Sometimes different valves will be closed and the gas will pool in different areas. If you have original injectors, its probably a good idea to replace them all anyway. This will provide the best and most consistent performance.

3: Weak fuel pump. The fuel pump can't build pressure quickly enough when primed (first turn on the key) or the built in check valve has allowed the gas to run back into the take, taking a second to build pressure and fire the injectors.

I am frustrated.. The first time ever today it took three cranks on the key to start it... then it did four more time through out the day... can it be the injectors.. it not the fuel pump it brand new.. course noew can have problems... Just wondering what you thought of this.... Normally it starts up like everyone else was describing.. its like every time is different.. but today was the first day to do what it did.. it acted like it had been sitting for a winter...

yeah, just about everytime i start my car (if the windows are down)  i smell unburned fuel,  smells like 'spray paint'.  could this be the injectors?

Even my brothers car with new injectors and fuel pump and everything up to snuff will take a different number each time. however, my ol' s-10 w/ TBI will take a couple of cranks each and every time, could time a clock by it. I don't think these cars have a sync issue where they have to find the crank timing before firing the injectors, but i'll look into it.
