I'm not sure exactly how much it will help in a 1/4 mile, but comparing to other cars I've ridden in/driven after gear swaps, the difference IS noticeable.

IMO its not really a streetable gear for a daily driver.  Yeah, it might help A LITTLE in the 1/4, but if is only about a tenth, and your gas mileage suffers horribly.  My Cutlass Calais (winter beater) has a Quad 4 and a Getrag 282 w/3.64 gearing or something like that, and in 5th gear it revs 3300rpm at 80mph.  Now, since that engine has a rev limiter at 7200, its not reving very high, but with a 3.1 thats getting up there in the revs, and gas mileage as I already said will suffer a lot.

That is the only thing I don't like about my Talon...4000RPM in 5th at 80!

I have been through the numbers on this subject. 3.33 @ 100=4500 rpm,3.73 @100=5000 rpm, 4.11 @ 100=5500.

Coupl of examples. My brothers camero from 4.11 to 4.56 netted almost 3 tenths and it never bogged agin with the slicks. A/ gas dragster 5.12 to 6.13 netted almost 1 second and after dialing in the clutch it was 120* cooler at the end of a run.

Lower the gear the better the launch and less stress on the drive line.

Going with the carrier change and 33/37 chain ratio may be as low as we can go (4.11)  :D  unless there are aftermarket parts.

The biggest problem is the VSS. A 10% reduction might be ok. 20% I don't know yet but I am working on it.

As far as drive ability You have to figure out what you want.

Ok now add to that the stall of the tq converter    .
The 65 PU we have has a 3.73 rear end and a turbo 350 with a (advertised->)2500 stalled converter. Were doing 70mph at 6300rpm. Thank god this 327 can rev to 8K  8)  . The gas mileage does suck bad.

I think that if you do a lot city driving it really be beneficial to driveability.  Since I swapped in the getrag 284(3.67) I noticed a little higher rpms while cruising, but I'd only say about 400 rpms or so.  It's not really noticeable, but then again I have a stock exhaust yet so it's just a tad more engine noise than before.  I changed the speed sensor constant in the computer so my speedo is accurate.

Usually people don't care.  I know I don't.  Its just that if its your everyday driver, it is something to keep in mind.  If the gearing is only going to give you a tenth in the 1/4, but your gas mileage suffers significantly, then it might not be worth it.  When my dad went from 2.93 to 3.29 gearing in his GTP his gas mileage dropped about 7mpg on the freeway.  Not that he cared, its just that is a big drop.

would the 4t60 transmission be able to withstand higher horsepower numbers due to the reduced stress on the drivetrain...or would the gains only be marginal in this area?

I cain't complain too much. But what gets to me is that I run out of gear on the Interstate "autobahn"    . Well you all still have OD. I soppose I can get a gear vender for that or a 200r4.

As far as the 4t60 taking more beating..well just a little more beating.

:!:  :!:  How'd you do that?! That's what I think needs to be done to my chip for the speedometer to finally read accurately.
It's something with the 88 Getrag 282's and their smaller VSS gears that throw the 90 VSS sensor off..
I wonder if I could just buy an 88 VSS and replace it.. hmm
I just want the HUD and speedo (and milage!) accurate again.

A dealer might be able to change it for you. See if you can find a performance shop in your area that deals with trannys and rear ends, I'm sure they can fix it.
