I thought I read somewhere that the TGP rods were stronger than other GM 3.1MPFI rods. Is this true?Any other engine parts that would be a slight upgrade from a N/A 3.1 motor?

I don't buy any of that 3.1 "V" internals are stronger/better than the 3.1 "T"

fables IMHO

i'd have to agree.  the only thing i've seen that is for sure different (internally) is the oil pump.  my LG5 had a Melling 95HV oil pump from the factory whereas my LH0 had a regular GM part.

as for the rods, i think everyone would agree they are the same between LG5 and LH0 engines...both of them have forged rods that are plenty strong.  the only things the LG5 has that are supposedly stronger are the crankshaft, block and pistons but from what i've seen no one has actually proven any of that.

As far as I know for sure, the heads are diferent. But even that has proven falsely as I have pulled some "heart" heads from a regal. beyond that? who knows what GM did, I am not even sure GM knew what GM did.

Someone on a beretta forum was saying they were stonger but I didn't really trust the source. Now there's no need to go tear down the TGP that just came to the JY. It's got 104K but the engine looks to be in good shape. All the good stuff is gone except rear manifold and downpipe. I may go on half price day and pull them so they don't get crushed.

yes and the crank was supose to be from the 3.1 that was in the minivans that came with the MPFI 3.1's but i still don't buy it....

yeah the heads are a little different...sort of.  as far as i know all '89 LH0 engines got the same heads the '89 & '90 LG5 engine got.  the LG5 combustion chamber is less "defined".  i think that must be where the slight drop in CR comes from.

If you are worried about stronger rods, just get some SBC rods and get them milled to fit, yes they will fit, just have to be milling slightly and have a bigger wrist pin diamter.

That or get Crower Sportsman rods, they are already the right everything....

Jeff's stickied post at the W-body board says this about the rods for what it's worth.

"Forged Rods, these forged versions are unique to the 1989-90 TGP and TSTE only, part number 10070113, C-1037 Heat Treated Steel Forging, SAE 1050 Air Quenched Rod Caps."

So if that info is right they are slightly better? Now I'm really confused. But from the responses I've gotten there's no point in pulling the ones from the TGP engine in the JY.
