if indeed it is a TGP specific transmission, i would suspect a regualr 4T60 wouldnt hold up long

That's exactly what I'm thinking is going on, Prospeeder.  The guy I bought my TGP from a few months ago didn't have the tranny replaced at a dealer, it was replaced at just some shop.  They probably put the regular 4T60 in there instead of the 4T60HD.  How can I tell which tranny is in my TGP?  If it is indeed a regular 4T60, I am DEFINITELY doing a 5 spd swap.

is there any delay between shifts?

you dont need to jump to any conclusions before you do the basic two or three things that any smart guy would do before driving any newly aquired vehicle.

IMMEDIATELY upon purchase, out with the old filter, new fluid. motor mount, tighten the tv cable if needed, vacuum lines. then you might be able to see how it shifts and if its a tgp tranny. if its not, believe me, you will know soon.

No it shifts GREAT.  Very firm and no delay. I adjusted my TV cable this week, so it shifts at 5,275 RPM.  I replaced all my vacuum lines, couplers, and check valves today.  I replaced my dogbones today also.  I still need to get a lower motor mount.  It still clunks when I come to a stop, but it now does it very quietly and it no longer jerks forward.  Unfortunately, the tranny still slips when coming from a complete stop.  I will get my motor mount tomorrow if Napa is open.  I will do the fluid and filter later this week.  Until then, it will sit in my garage.  I don't wanna do any needless damage.

In addition to the stuff mentioned above, I will be dropping the oil pan to check it out.

yea one of my trannies slips a little, still need to drop the pan and change the filter, if that dont clear it up believe me I will be taking it in to Aamco and spend like under 2 grand on a rebuild. I say aamco because they are the only place I know of that can get all the proper TGP parts in the tranny around here. you get your car back in a week every time. nobody else around here has ever seen or heard about TGPs, so they have no clue how unique it is and I cant trust them. aamco is also the cheapest in town.

I think if we get better pressure from a clean filter our clutches should be able to grab harder. dont do what I did when I first got my car. I changed over to redline synthetic fluid and before I changed the filter let my friend drive it and get on it with a blown mount, no valence,tv cable all messed up.  ;) the tranny blew out all the forward gears..

I always thought, maybe it was the synthetic ATF? now that I look back its obvious. filter, then flush.

I'm wondering if my check valve is on correctly.  I bought a new one from O'reillys help #47150, and put it on.  When I went up to the front of the car with the engine idling and put my finger by the open port (the big, funnel shaped end), I could feel air coming out of the open end.  Is this normal?  Do I have the check valve on correctly?  Check out the pic below.

My public apology. I'm sorry Nick, I had thought it was the other way. Sorry for the mis-info...but hey, mine's wrong too lol.

That's okay, Grinders.  Of the little I have driven it, I haven't really driven it hard at all.  Alright, I'll change that around and see if it fixes some of my problems! Thanks for the picture Mfewtrail, that was really helpful.   :icon_cool:

Okay, the check valve is on correctly now, but I won't be able to test-drive it for another day or two, because I am in the process of replacing my oil pump drive seal right now (OH MY GOD IT IS A FRICKIN MESS!!!!)  I hope having the check valve on the wrong way didn't cause any harm to the tranny.  It was on the wrong way for less than a day though, because when I changed it to the right way, the hose to the modulator was already popped off.  I took a picture of the job the tranny shop the previous owner sent it to half-assed job (picture below).  I'm seriously hoping my tranny isn't screwed over!

Nick, I found an old post about the check valve(was actually searching for something else) and the way you had it installed before was actually RIGHT. The vacuum routing diagram has the check valve hooked up in the wrong way, and I did not research it for myself to make sure it was correct before telling you how to hook it up. The real public apology comes from me(and whoever made that vac diagram ), sorry Nick. :icon_redface:

Here's the correct diagram for the trans check valve that Jeff M. posted.

and the explanation he typed along with it.

"For everyone reading, the vacuum line coming from the upper intake neck supplies an engine load (vac/boost) source signal to the tranny via the metal vac line, check valve and Vac Mod, that way the tranny's internal fluid pressures are made to match pressures for shift firmness based on engine load, meaning a high vacuum/light load causes the tranny fluid pressure to run low: easy shift (is all that is needed with a light load), then as the engine load increases/vacuum becomes less, the tranny fluid pressure increases and firms up the shifts.  But the Vac Mod is not able to handle the boosted vacuum source so there is a bleed port on that check valve that is supposed to get rid of pressure/boost going to the Vac Mod, but it cannot bleed enough so there is also a restrictor in the end of the metal vacuum line, quite a bit of engineering in just this setup   :) "

Crap!!  Now I have to change it back.  Well I got it all back together and now it only slips from a stop sometimes.  Today, I drove around my block, and on one street, I stopped four times; it slipped twice and worked fine twice.  On the other road, I stopped five times and it didn't slip at all.  So it is slipping intermittently.  Later this week, I'm gonna drop the pan, flush the tranny out, and replace the filter to see if that stops the slipping.  I'm gonna go change the check valve right now.  Thanks everyone

when it slips is it a chattering sound or just a let loose slippery slip?

I broke a band once and it chatters.
