Alrighty, so I just did a 700 mile (well close to 800 after my buddy decides he's frickin Magellan) road trip this weekend out to Wisconsin to pick up my winter beater. I'm going to take some pictures sometime here and post them, but what I have is a 1985 Pontiac 6000 STE. Damn nice condition, with the exception of one door having rust. This thing kicks ass! It has a full digital display, floor shifter thank God, damn quick 2.8 Liter H.O. FI V6, 3 speed auto...needs another gear, moonroof, or sunroof, whatever the difference is; and the RARE pigskin suede leather seats. Supposedly this was a huge rarity, I dunno... I just remember hearing that a backseat alone with the pigskin suede went for over $800 on eBay. Not bad...considering I paid $600 for it! everything works, with the exception of the passenger front power lock, and the hood popper needs to be replaced. Coincidentally, and werid as hell, when I made my longer road trip this last winter/spring to Ohio to get my TGP, those were the only thing wrong with it too lol.

I decided, in order to not be a thread hog, that this should be a showcase for everyone winter beater! Post pictures and stories, info...anything you have about your winter car, or cars! Hopefully we'll have a good turn out!

Ok, so the other night when I posted about my 6000, I was a bit tired and wired and overexaggerated about the condition of it...it's not the best, but hey for 600 bucks I got a steal. Little rust spots among the big spot on the passenger door. But other than that and the dull color, it's nice lol. Here's some pics I took.

and the power plant...

Well, let me know what you think...and c'mon let's get more people in here to post! Lol!

I'll post my truck someday soon.  That thing got me around great today!! Drove it through 2 feet of water a few times today.  1994 Ford Mazda B4000 Ranger edition.

That thing is a tank.  I've had people tell me about Ford 4x4's and I'll tell you so far I am impressed.  I put some 31x10.5's on it a couple months back and its sits higher than it should.  I hit a huge puddle today at 65 in the interstate, held that wheel straight and it plowed right through.  Busted the exhaust somewhere, but I swear that thing is a tank.  I love it.  Pics soon.

Quick question: regarding my 6000 STE, it has a 2.8 MFI, and for some reason the idle is fricked up...like when I start the car, it shoots up to about 2000 RPM immediately, and drops to about 500ish, then shoots up, then down, up, down, etc...then eventually it kind of settles between 1100 and 1550, still going up and down. Now I just changed the plugs, distributor cap, o2 sensor, rotor, changed oil....what's left? I tried to drive it when I got off work and at first it died. started up again, then died, then if I give it gas a bit it holds...it was still shifting RPMs and when I tried to put it in reverse while it was in higher RPMs it killed lol...eventually it steadied and I could drive it...I figure there's two different problems: why it idles bad, and why it dies when I start it up. Once it's running and driving, it feels good till I maintain around 1600 or 1700ish RPMs. Any ideas?

you can attribute that to faulty injectors and/or a vacuum leak, that would be what I was looking for anyway.

EDIT: I should also ask if it ever starts hard, or smokes after starting.  I had an 86 Cavy Z24 that had injectors fail monthly.  Those older injectors are junk.

Thanks! I was acutally out checking the vac lines and I'm not sure at all what line it is, but there's this big line that goes from something connected to the throttle body down to the top of I think the heads? It's a thicker line and it's attached to several other vacuum lines, but anyways, it has a rubber grommet that has been worn away and it finally must have ripped off. Not sure what this line is called or what it runs from...but thats my guess as to the main problem...anyone here know if the 2.8 from 1985 had a IAC?? I can't find it ANYWHERE and I've been following the Haynes book...it's not where it says the 2.8's IAC's are...unless this was an earlier model and didn't require one? I'm not up on that...all I know is Advance sold me one for it lol and there doesn't seem to be one anywhere.

That 2.8 looks similar to the one my buddy had in his 90 Firebird, and I don't know a whole lot about that engine, his was run by a distributor and I never got to mess around with it a whole lot.  I had an 86 which was noticeably much different.  I would stop by a parts store and see if they have one in stock, get a look at it, and even compare it.  Don't replace it right away, try cleaning the end of it (if its similar to the TGP its damn easy) and then reset the idle after you disconnect the negative terminal.

Does it ever start hard or smoke after starting and sitting? I would be convinced that the idle problem is related to worn out injectors, bad pulses and possibly rich/lean condition.

I almost bought that car. I was waiting till the end of the auction, but it never made it that far. Nice car man. And a damn good find. Does it have the ultra rare memory seats? Or the pain in the ass ABS system? Pics of the interior PLEASE!!??

EDIT:

I dont think the 85's had a IAC, but rather a IAC motor. Kinda like what the caddies had (if I am remembering right) where a small motor pushs up on the throttle acting like a IAC. I have never seen one go bad thou. there is a somewhat complicated vacume routing on the things thou. Is there anything on the catalyst at all that might help? Some parts from the Pontiac fiero 2m6 are interchangeable with that motor. Anyways, I cant help you. The book for my g-mas 85 2.8 is in colorado, and I am not there right now LOL. Will see if my local library still has the FSM.
