Dead AC Compressor?

I was going to recharge my AC today and I took the relay for the compressor out and jumped the terminals with a paper-clip.  When I jumped the terminals, the idle kicked up, but the AC clutch did NOT engage.  So does this mean that my AC compressor is bad?

well did you jump the right one? It could be the compressor clutch is not engauging, but if the compressor is dead, it would engauge the clutch and then be siezed, causing the belt to scream over the sized up compressor. It could the be the clutch  is no good, usually its easier to just get a new compressor, as you dont know the actual condition of the compressor itself

I would jump the terminals at the compressor itself for a definitive test if the compressor is dead or not.

Yes, I jumped the right one- there is only one way to do it that raises the idle and SHOULD engage the AC clutch, but the AC clutch does NOT engage.

How would I go about doing this?  I already jumped the terminals where the relay for the AC normally sits on the passenger side box.

2 ways to do it. Go to a junkyard, and cut off the 2 wire lead going to the AC compressor on a junk car. Take that lead, and extend the wires. One going to ground, one going to hot. Start car, connect the wires to the battery, and see if it works.

The other way is to use to wires, with those little pinch type plugs on the end of the wires (forgot the name of them), and run those to the battery and do the same thing.

If the AC system isnt charged, dont run it long, just long enuf to see if it works. No freon means low to no oil.

I got a new AC compressor and put it in the car last week- now I have to charge up the system with refrigerant, but I'm not sure how... I have the AC ON in the car with the fan turned on high, filler can is attached to the low side port, yet it is not sucking down the refrigerant... I even tried jumping the AC compressor at the terminals for a couple seconds and it didn't seem to do much....

How should I go about filling the system up with refrigerant?

First you have to get the system vacced down of air. Make sure it holds the vacume, then you start with the charging procedure. If you dont have a vacume machine, it will have to be done professionally.

If u BOUGHT i new compressor i would REALLY recommend going to a pro, those are exspensive, and you dont wanna mess it up

Actually I got it outta the JY for $25. :laugh:  I wonder how much it would cost to get it vac'd down...

I had a $800 vacume pump and a cheap air compressor powerd Harbor Frieght unit. THey worked the same.
