In my 89, my tape player is a 2 unit setup and i want to put a CD player in it but cant find an adapter harness that fits.  i know i need a different bezel once i wire the CD player in but was wondering if anyone had any luck changing this style tape player out.  Also i know that the steering wheel controls wont work but i dont care about that. Thanks for any help.

you got that gay little setup in your car, that's a pain... what I had to do in my moms regal was use a normal wiring harness for the GMs and make jumper wires for it because the stock radio was actually under the dash near the blower motor where the harness was... it was a real pita but it worked... and you should be able to find one of those bezzels in your local yard, if not let one of us know, i'm sure one of us could grab one for ya...

I first saw that setup in a '89 GP in a junkyard.. I had to scratch my head for a minute at that one :icon_lol: I was trying to find an antenna plug for my car and I couldn't find it for the life of me :icon_lol:

You can get the steering wheel controls to work, so long as the aftermarket deck has a remote (name one that doesn't, in recent history ). You'd need a PAC SWI-X (or at least SWI-V, I think that's the older one I have. I'm not sure those are exactly what they're called). Basically you wire a box up under the steering column to to the steering wheel control wiring + power & ground, then you run a wired IR transmitter somewhere where it can be aimed at the front of the deck, in view of the IR receiver. The transmitter is tiny (about the size of an LED bulb) but I found it was hard to hide it neatly and still have a good view of the deck. I tucked it in the crack between the upper/lower halves of my center console, but sometimes it twists and points away from the deck. When it works it's fantastic though. You can problem and of the buttons on the steering wheel to replicate any buttons on the deck's remote.

Its a pain to find that dash kit but I did.  Basically as far as I know I'm the only one who has figured this out other than a few installers.  A company called Metra makes the dash kit, it comes with a metal bracket.  Basically you take your stock trim and cut out that divider.  Here is the Kit you need.

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?DID=7&Partnumber=265-667&AID=1457539&PID=1313893

Here is the radio antenna adapter and lengthener you need

Here is the wiring harness you need

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=265-606

Basically what you do is take the stock radio and cassette out and remove the wiring harness that goes from the stock radio to the cassette and the rest of that wiring you shove out of the way.  Now go and take the glove box liner out.  On the top of the IP carrier is the stock receiver take that out.  The wire harness adapter above plugs into those connections in the GLOVE box that originally pluged into the metal receiver.  Obviously the other end is spliced into the new head unit harness.  The antenna wire will have to be pulled down and rerouted to get enough length with the adapter to reach the head unit.  Make sure the head unit you buy is not too deep and is a single din style or you will have to cut out the back of the ip carrier where the stock radio went to fit.  Mine slid right into the small area where the stock radio was an secures very nicely.  It is really simple once you do it.  The stock radio is way fucked up.......I hate it and am glad it is gone!  Here is a shot of mine after install, I painted the trim to match the interior (the dash kit comes black abs)

BTW are you Ike?  flybynite is always telling me about you just wanted to know if this is you.

Nope no snow here in Binghamton but where I work up in Norwich got like 5 inches.  Flybynite is doing my turbo similar to yours for the GPSE it is going to be pretty slick setup.  My sis goes to college where I did in Troy (RPI) so I'm always going through Albany on my way to my parents house (Newport, RI).  When I get the turbo all together I'll have to give you a ring when I come through and let you check it out.  PM me your number, also we are trying to get a track day together was supposed to be sunday but my car is down until the turbo is done.....we will reschedule and you are welcome to come.  Going down to Island Drags in NJ

Back on topic yes if you by that wiring harness it comes with lots of wire but from what I remember I think you still have to lengthen a few wires to get them to reach under the glove box.  Basically you plug them into the harness that is on the bottom of the IP carrier, take out the glove box and look up and you will see it.  Just some advice but get the dash kit, I had a few later model trim benzles and they won't fit or support the radio, short of swapping out the ENTIRE ip carrier and dash your only SECURE option to mount and aftermarket head unit is the Metra kit.  For 12 bucks I don't see why anyone would do anything else :)

The GP is an 88 btw  :icon_wink: the original poster car
