ANYONE REBUILT THEIR OWN TRANSMISSION? I AM REBUILDING MINE AND WHAT A NIGHTMARE TRYING TO GET THE RIGHT PARTS. FIRST OFF, THE SERVICE MANUAL SAYS ALL TRANSMISSIONS FOR OUR CARS WILL HAVE AN ID TAG ON THE TRANNY. MINE HAS NO TAG ON  IT AND YOU CAN SEE ONE WAS NEVER INSTALLED. A LOT OF BAND AND CLUTCH PACK UPDATES. i JUST PURCHASED OFF OF EBAY THE 1989 GM TURBO SUPPLEMENT MANUAL BUT IT HAS NO TRANSMISSION INFO AS I HOPED IT WOULD. NOW IT APPEARS THE SPACER PLATE TO CHANNEL PLATE GASKET IS WRONG.  :motz2:  OFF TO THE DEALERSHIP I GO, AGAIN AND YET AGAIN!  JUST CURIOUS ABOUT ANYONE ELSES REBUILD EXPERIENCE. ALSO NOTICED IN THE 89 TURBO MANUAL IT HAD SPECS FOR 1990 4T60 AND NOT 89?  SURE WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE HAD THEY PUT THE ID TAG ON. WOE IS ME, WOE IS ME.

There is a rebuild manual on eBay for the 4t60/440t4 transmission...440t4 is the same as our 4t60, atleast in the manual sense. They usually sell for about $10, and I'm guessing they'll have everything you wanna know!

Oh, contact jimmy on this board, he has a video that will help you with the rebuild!

THANKS FOR THE REPLY. HAVE THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL BUT ITS A 93, HENCE 4T60E. BOUGHT THE MANUAL YOU ARE REFERING TO AND IT GIVES GENERIC INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO REBUILD ALL 440T4'S FROM '85 TO '89 BUT DOESNT TELL
ALOT OF SPECIFICS ESPECIALLY UPDATES. AGAIN, MORE FUN FOR ME.  OH THE JOYS OF THE TGP. I CURRENTLY AM IN THE PROCESS OF FRESHENING UP THE CAR WHILE I HAVE THE ENGINE OUT.

THIS IS WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR:

HAVE STRIPPED AND PAINTED FRONT SUBFRAME. LOOKS AS GOOD AS NEW! :icon_cool:
POLISHED ALL ALUMINUM PARTS ON ENGINE INCLUDING TIMING COVER AND UPPER AND LOWER MANIFOLDS
REPLACED A/C COMPRESSOR
REPLACED BELT TENSIONER AND PULLEY

REMOVED RUSTED BATTERY TRAY AND WELDED IN NEW ONE. PAINTED BACK TO FACTORY COLOR
INSTALLING KYB FRONT STRUTS
INSTALLING SLOTTED FRONT ROTORS
RESEALED ENTIRE ENGINE
PAINTED EXHAUST MANIFOLDS WITH CERAMIC BLACK HIGH HEAT PAINT

NOW LETS ALL PRAY AFTER THIS THAT WHEN I PUT IT ALL BACK TOGETHER THAT IT ACTUALLY RUNS!!

STILL NEEDED:

TURBO BLANKET IF SOMEONE KNOWS WHERE TO GET THE FACTORY TYPE OR ONE SIMILAR. IF NONE AVAILABLE, WHAT HAS EVERYONE ELSE DONE TO INSULATE TURBINE HOUSING.

STILL NEED A PICTURE(S) OF SPEEDOMETER RESISTOR REPAIR AND PARTS NECESSARY

THANKS FOR EVERYONE'S ADVICE SO FAR.  :icon_lol:

When Jimmy's turbo cover fell apart he found some kind of blanket he used to wrap his. Its nothing like the factory one and can't seem to be reused if it has to be taken off but it does keep it from melting things.

On the A/C did you replace the oriface tube while you have it apart? I would recomend using a blue ford oriface tube if you are going to use R-134. Most of the local shops use the blue ford oriface tube in converted GM cars here in florida. I believe the OEM tube is white.

A lot of people on ClubGP use these blankets from ebay.

I'm not sure if they will fit our itty bitty turbo properly though. I do plan on ordering one sometime soon as my red car is blanketless. I believe that black blanket they offer is a bit bigger than the gray one. I will email that guy soon to confirm that.

For 15.00 I bought some DEI on sale at my local parts store and made my own wrap.  Might not look as baller as that 116.00 piece, but it does the same IF NOT BETTER and the wastegate arm moves just fine.

HEY, THAT 116.00 BLANKET LOOKS SWEET. IN FACT I DARE SAY IT LOOKS BETTER THAN THE ONE THAT CAME ON THE CAR. THANKS FOR THE INFO.

ALSO, I DID PURCHASE A WHITE GM ORIFICE TUBE BUT HAVE NOT INSTALLED THE LINE YET. WHAT YEAR/MODEL FORD DOES THIS BLUE ORIFICE TUBE GO IN SO I WILL KNOW WHAT TO GET. THANKS AGAIN. :icon_wink:

year shouldn't matter with a good parts person. If they need make model and year they are idiots. the outside diameter of the assembly is the same. The colors of the tubes tells what diameter orifice the tube is. So basicly a ford blue tube will have a differant diameter tube in it then a white GM or a red ford. The white tube was calibrated for the R-12 your car used. From what the local parts store has told me and I confirmed with 2 local shops the blue tube is a better calibration for R-134 in a converted GM. I just looked and found a factory air part number of 38621 just make sure it is blue. there is an arrow on it make sure you put it in with the arrow pointing to the firewall. The old one will have an arrow too and it should have been pointing in the direction of freon flow (from condenser to evaporator radiator to firewall). Also don't use as much R-134 as the R-12 system would have used. I believe a TGP R-12 amount was about 2.25 pounds. The correct amount should be just under 2 pounds. I believe a 98 lumina with factory R-134 and a very similar A/C system is marked as 1.89 pounds. Thats what we did to Jimmys car when we swapped out to R-134 blue tube and just under 2 pounds and for florida it worked very well. Also don't put the accumulator in untill last and leave it capped up until then. There is a dissicant bag in there to remove any moisture in the system and when exposed to the atomophere it will start to remove moisture from the air. It should have been capped when you bought it. If one of the caps fell off in the box don't accept it. (I have seen this happen).

"Design Engineering, Inc" can be found at most performance shops (online or local) or sometimes even at your nearest parts stores (Like mine) .  Google them up for a full read out of who they are and what they do.
