1st time at the track

The Master

Me and my son took the TGP to New England Dragway last night. 1st time ever. Best time out of 4 passes was a 15.114. My son did all the driving. He had NO experience with the track or the car. As you can see on the slip his R/T sucked. He also had problems with wheel spin. Was a good time  :icon_biggrin: All in all I don't think it would be that hard to get it down to a 14.6 or so. I just changed the injectors to the Ford yellow tops and I think it could use a little more tuning. No prep was done. We drove there, raced, then drove home. The passenger + trunk / back seat cargo = 230 lbs. KAZ tune.

Not bad for a first run. New England Dragway typically sucks for "good times" from what I've seen. Chop that 60ft down(better launch) and you'd get into the high 14's without a problem. How was your son launching the car by the way? Was he just matting his foot to the floor at the light or did he "brake torque" any before launching?

Not bad for going out there cold.  Drop the tire pressure in the front and loose the spare in the rear as well as everything in the trunk.  Keep as much weight on the front end as possible, it helps with wheel spin.  What tires are you running? 

Was he brake boosting?

You have some experience with the track? It's $20 per driver, $10 for a co-pilot.
Phil (my son) tried different things when launching. He just doesn't have any experience with this car. First time he's driven it. 1 of the runs was a 16.8  :icon_eek: . Looooooots of tire spin there. His r/t for that run was a .491  :icon_confused: . Does that mean if he had that r/t on the 1st run the 1/4 time would be almost .3 lower? A 14.8? What does 230 lbs. of stuff equate to in time added?
I was havin a great time watchin him. Next time I'll have to bring an air pump. And do at least 1 run by myself  :icon_cool:

David, the reaction time doesn't count against the time at all. Most people have came to the conclusion that 100lbs of weight reduction should net you about a .1 decrease in elapsed time. So 230lbs would be about .233 off your times. Try launching as hard as you can without spinning a lot. A little wheelspin isn't a problem. I usually try to launch around 2,000rpms at the track. If you spin a lot like that, try lowering the launch rpm a bit or delaying fully pressing the gas pedal off-the-line.

Here's an example of my Black car from the track to show you the difference the launch(60ft time) makes.

Run 1:  60ft - 2.337, ET = 14.959 @ 91.61mph
Run 2:  60ft - 2.148, ET = 14.705 @ 91.94mph

So .189 off of the 60ft time was worth .254 off my ET.
