Ok i want to rebuild the tranny myself.  First off, are there rebuild kits available for our transmissions?  Secondly, what transmission should i request the rebuild kit for ( i dont think ours are the stock 440t)  Please help, spring is coming and this is my first of many projects on this damn think...lol...thanks!

I'm in the same boat as you with the tranny rebuild.  I was really hoping that Jeff M. would be done with his kit by now. Otherwise, I'll probably just do a regular rebuild.

Well, would the standard 440t rebuild kit work on this transmission?  I mean if its the case where it would work, but not as good, I would still probably do it just outta shear necessity and time and money savings.  I mean I am sure there are kits available out there for our turbo specific transmissions. Right??

Jeff is working on a kit for our transmissions.  Not sure when it'll be done yet, but it will be a great kit I'm sure.

And you can use regualr trans kits in the Turbo trans, but you will find that most of the stuff they want you to do for the kit is already done at the factory.  But the trans kit (TransGo JR 440) works great!  You will also benefit from the new improved seals and updates that are in the JR kit.  It's the kit I used on my Turbo trans rebuild.

Is the Transgo JR-440 kit a rebuilt kit???  I saw it listed for only $34.44 and it doesn't seem right that a rebuild kit would be so cheap

No the JR kit isn't a rebuild kit. It replaces problem areas and enhances the performance. I have one in my garage. I didn't use it because the only thing i wanted was to have it shift faster to 3rd. My trans was rebuilt and beefed up about 50k ago and works very well and I didn't want it taken apart until it breaks. The place I bought it from said this would do that. Well after talking to transgo it won't. They had already shipped it.

A JR kit and a rebuild kit might be the best way to go. Call transgo they
know alot about these trany's and were very helpful.

I think the problem with 3rd is there is no dedicated accumulator, it uses the 2nd (?) gear apply servo on the backside as an accumulator. I suppose you could mess with the port size or the servo spring to try and change the shift, or block off that port completely so it wouldn't have any accumulator action.

Hey Sleepered  thanx for that link to the tranny website.  Awesome site, they got a ton of stuff...now i just gotta get that damn tranny ripped apart so i can figure out what the heck it needs...i really appreciate it...i was at my wits end trying to find stuff.  Outta curiosity, have you ever ordered from them?  Just wondering about their quality and prices, since they dont list prices online.  Anybody who knows anything about acerecon.com please lemme know!  THANX!

Our tranny is not the 440t, it is the 4T60.  it is the predisessor to the 440t.  Just thought that you would like to know.

Chris A

It doesn't really  make a difference, 440T4 and 4t60 are the same tranny until it got the -E after it, then it was pretty much the same. So you can call it either and be ok. GM just changed their naming convention, the 700r4 became a 4l60 and a 125c became a 3t40. The 4t40 is a new tranny, it has no older twin, and the 4t65 and 4t65hd and 4t80 also don't have an older twin.

Chris, You maby correct. Since this subject started I been trying to remember what the guys did to mine when the rebuilt it. They had a lot of trouble. Had to take it in and out 4 times. (boy did they loose there shirt)because 3rd gear kept burning up the clutches. The owner told the mechanic to go through it and use every trick you know of. So I therefore
got the benifit of different clutch packs(extra clutches for sure) the rest i don't know but they said they spent an extra $960.00 on special parts.

I remember him telling me that he had to close a hole in the valve body plate or when it shifted it would shift so hard it would break the trans.
Obviosuly I don't know what hole that was. Third gear was the orginal problen so I would guess the third gear apply.

When it finally engaes its solid(chirps the tires) it just seems to be day dreaming before it engages although there is no or very little rpm increase and the car is still pulling. Quicker shifts, quicker et. I now regret not putting the 37/33 drive sprockets in.

Thanks for the input.

Beg your pardon. This thng doesn't chirp the tires in third gear it does it in second. Guess I got to lean to count! Wish it did.

Yeah, mine chirps into 2nd, but 3rd is nice and smooth...sometimes hard depending on how far the throttle is.
