What exactly are the differences between a gtp and a tgp of the same year? I've never had opportunity to even look under the hood of an older gtp. I know the newer ones are superchareged, were all gtp's s/c'ed? Are there any other differences between the two? Just wondering...

tgp's were made 89-90 GTP's were made 91-up 89-90's had 3.1 turbos, 91-96 (96 I believe) had 3.4's the next gen's had the superchargers. :drinking:

For one, there was never a GTP for the year(s) of the TGP. The first GTP came out in 1991, it had the 3.4 DOHC(naturally aspirated..have good top-end power) engine w/ ~205hp or so coupled w/ the 4T60-E transmission(electronic) vs. the TGP's vaccum controlled 4T60(special to the TGP....regular 4T60's in the NA cars are not as strong).  The 91-93 GTP's also had the option of a 5spd manual which was a pretty rare thing for the cars to actually get one, this particular transmission is the Getrag 284, the 3.1's that got the manual transmission received the supposed weaker getrag 282 that a lot of Fiero guys bolt up to V8's and all different motors.  The 91-93 GTP's have basically the same kit/exterior appearance as the TGP's do save for the "mini quad" recessed headlights opposed to the TGP's composite style(I believe they are referred to as "composite) headlights and of course the badging.  The 94-96 GTP's have a different kit that has 2 "ribs/indentations" in the moldings opposed to the TGP/91-93 GTP kits w/ the 5 ribs in the moldings.  After 94(not sure the exact year(s)), the DOHC received about 10 more hp and IIRC became an "interference" motor, I think 96 is the only GTP interference motor..so maybe thats the only one w/ more power.  That should help you out a bit, if you're not a member of the w-body board yet, then you should join there also...the owner of the board, Shawn Lin, has a page there that has a good bit of background info on all w-body cars.

Wrong answer there.

The GTP was never offered with a 5 speed manual.  The only w-bodies that had that option were the Z34 and Cutlass.

1995 GTP's are rated at 210hp and 1996 at 215hp.  All of them limited by the automatic tranny, probably heat related since these 3.4 Liter monsters run hot, about 210+ on average.

TGP's are what about 190+/-5hp?

91-93gp had both the option of the 284(5 speed) and the 3.4L v6. The manual 3.4 had 210hp, and the automatic 205. Tgp's are rated at 205hp, and 220pds torque. I am not 100% sure that you could have the gtp package well mostly badges and a factory five-speed in 91-93 but there are factory 3.4/5speed gp's out there. My friend own's a 92. Also in 92 I do belive there was a Richard Petty special edition, which had a five-speed, and i assume that was considered a gtp.

TGPs are 205 hp and most tend to be pretty slow stock as most TGPs have a leaking cross-over pipe(which makes the car run rich).  Anyways, with just a chip(TopGun 160), new x-over, and a K&N my TGP ran a best of a 14.6 @ 95 mph in the 1/4 mile.  I don't see many GTPs running that unless they are pretty modded.  8)

While I haven't seen a GTP with one, I know for a fact that there are GPs from this era that have a 5-speed mated to either a 3.1 OR a 3.4.  A friend of mine had a '92 STE with a 3.1 manual and I saw a 3.4 manual STE on eBay a little while back.  We also found a '92 GM high school automotive shop donor in a junkyard a little while back with the 3.4 manual.  It only had 15K on the clock!!!    By the time we came back the following week with a truck to pick up the motor and tranny, the motor was gone.  But the tranny was sitting on the ground, so we took that.  I also grabbed the steering wheel with excellent leather (which Jeff M bought off me) and the CD player controls which will come in handy since I want factory CD players in all 3 of my Pontiacs.

95GTP, research before making statements!!!!...just kidding.....not many people know of the existence of the 5speed GP's....Ben aka Vegeta on the w-body board has a 92(I think) SE(w/ the DOHC) and 5spd tranny, a guy on clubgp also has a SE w/ the DOHC/5speed, there are a few more people in between the different boards w/ 5speed GTP's

My bust.  I stand corrected.

So then why is the 3.4 limited in hp?  Everything I have read and researched sez the tranny cant handle more hp.  That should not be the case with the getrag.

One Major Difference- The TGP is a much better car!!! I dont know one TGP owner who can tell me that the little ricers hearing their turbo spool up hasnt allowed them to get some of the weirdest looks ever! Most of the guys I run into wont even race me, they hear it once and then they just look away. And I have NEVER been beat my a GTP, and I just think the TGP is BADASS!!!

gm actually made a 3.4 w/ around 280hp w/ variable valve timing and all, but they knocked it way down, probaly for the transmission reason, and the fact that they didn't want the w-body whooping up on the firebirds, and camaro's. Of course they made a tgp w/ 305hp
