Hey I've seen those cd players in other GP's as well, around 93ish.

I was wondering if anyone has tried to replace "just" the CD part of the OEM AM/FM/CD player with one from a newer model. The CD player is a seperate case from the reciever and can be unpluged and removed. I pulled mine apart tried to fix it. It will spin the cd but will not read/play.
Maybe???? If anyone has a working one on the shelf..   let's talk.

I have.

The factory CD player in my TGP is very intermittant on when it works. Sometimes, It'll pull the CD in, won't play, and then spit it back out, or it will pull the CD in and not do anything, nor let me have it back, and also sometimes doesn't do anything at all.
Laying around, I had a CD player from a 1997 Grand Prix GT. It had been in a flood, and everything had worked fine with it until a couple of months after it had been drowned. It played CD's just fine, but the amp/tuner was screw up. So, I thought about using the CD mechanism from that CD player to replace the one in the old TGP cd player. Did it work? No, absolutly not. The 97 CD mechanism uses a single ribbon cable to connect to the main amplifier board in the radio. The 90 CD mechanism uses multiple little plugs to make it's connections. The 2 mechanisms were in no way interchangable.

You can however, replace your CD mechanism with a new one. I did this in my old 93 Lumina Z34. The factory CD player had problems playing, and I found out that this company ( http://www.mnrelectronics.com ) can sell you a new mechanism. So that's what I did, called them up, told them the part # from the cd mechanism, they sent me a replacement, and I sent my bad one back to them.
Check out my website. http://www.lukez34.com go to the 'Media Galleries'
and scroll down to the "Reference" section. You'll see a link to the repair procedure I created for my Lumina CD player.

Good Luck!

I did that except with a tape player.  They are seperate and found in many GM cars and trucks.

I'm going to try to find one of stereos about that year model. I'm still not sure we'er on the same page. When you unhook the CD player from the reciever there are seven brown wires that controls FF, REV, Power, Stop, and Skip etc. If the remote controls didn't work properly you could switch those around until the button does the correct function. :?  :?
