Title: What have you done to your TGP/TSTE lately?
Post by: mfewtrail on August 20, 2006, 02:36:52 AM
It's kinda slow around here, so I figured I'd start a new topic.... ;) Just wondering what everyone's been doing to their cars lately such as maintenance and/or adding another performance modification.

As of lately, I've added a set of Ford yellow top 19# injectors(~21.2# or a tad higher on our fuel pressure) to replace the leaky stock ones. Four of the stock injectors were leaking, three were pretty bad, the other was leaking very slightly. They all seemed to fail suddenly...but I've read that it isn't uncommon for the early multecs to become junk in a hurry. The car idles a lot smoother now and doesn't surge a bit like it was doing w/ the leaky multecs. I also installed a set of 1.6 ratio rocker arms from a '1994-95 3100. I pulled the rockers from an Oldsmobile Achieva w/ ~80,000 miles on it at the local yard. I could feel a noticeable difference after installing them, the car feels a tad stronger all around and the top end power has improved noticeably(still ain't nothing to brag about ). The next thing I plan to do to the car is fix the crossover. I have some flexes already, but I will be ordering another set that does not have an inner braided liner. I've seen some posts on clubgp about various brands of flexes w/ inner braided liners failing on downpipes in GTP's and other 2nd Gen W-bodies(the inner liner is crimped into place). On the flexes that failed, the liner pulls away from where it's crimped and causes a big restiction to flow :icon_redface: .  I'll probably end up going with the flexes w/o the inner liner...

I got my engine bay half painted. Block has two more coats of black and one coat of clear, because the machine shop didn't a shitty job. Got the new waterpump install in the timing cover. Oil pump screen, windage tray and crank sensor are installed.

Just ordered a whole bunch of goodies: new vacuum ball, oil dipstick (broke mine when removing from block), timing damper and LS1 valve seats from GMPD, and I'm getting a set of LS2 springs, retainers and locks with 16k on them from a guy on LS1tech.

If all goes well (speeding ticket $$), and GMPD doesn't take like 3 years to do my order, my heads should be rebuilt and maybe even on the motor within a month. Can't really do much on the motor until I get the timing damper and the heads done, I still have work to do on the car though, and I still need to find a subframe and control arms.

Detailed the living shit out of it and did some wetsanding in the process. That helped get rid of some of the factory orange peel that was noticable in places. It shines like no other right now, and each side reflects like a mirror. Spent 1.5 hours cleaning each of the rims. Then took the buffer to them and shined up the outer aluminum rim and the gold paint. (I've never seen gold x-laces look this good) :icon_mrgreen:

Other than that, it's sat in the garage for the past 4 months. I drove it around town a few weeks ago and it still had it's usual idle problems. Fixed the high idle problem, runs like it's new now.
Parts awaiting installation
  - NOS GM FPR - Done 9/18/06
  - GM Accumulator for the PM III Done 9/18/06
  - GM Heated O2 sensor (replacing the Bosch sensor)
  - New antenna cable

Other maintenance to do list
  - Oil Change
  - Remove the turbo and x-over check for connection leaks. Replace accumulator while they are off. No longer need to do.
  - Repaint and reposition the valance so it doesn't hang down
  - Tint the windows
  - Replace tires
  - Replace carpet
  - Replace struts

All of this is money pending of course.

Rebuilt Trans
Rebuilt 3000 Stall Converter
External Trans Cooler
Exhaust/Turbo Wrap
Re-routed a BUNCH of water lines
Triple Gauge Pod
Electric Boost Gauge
EGT Gauge

Just the basic list.  I would definitely say any advantage a 5spd ever had on my car is now gone.

Oh Davis, what kind of EGT temps do you see in the CS?

what about the advantage of a 5-speed just plain being a ton more fun to drive? :icon_razz:

anyways, my Turbo Cutlass has been sitting in the same spot for 2+ months now.  it's gotten alot of new suspension/brake parts since it's been sitting but it's probably going to be sitting for quite awhile longer yet.  i start it up and let it run once a week but that's about it.  alot of things in my life are up in the air at the moment so no big plans for it.

I threw a big army tarp over my TGP and threw in some dryer sheets to keep out the mice, even though there isn't really an interior anyway :icon_redface:.  Getting it ready for Winter cuz I ain't gonna have money til spring.  I know...It Blows. :icon_frown:
Does That count as Something? :icon_lol:

I wouldnt put a tarp on it if its out in the open, wind will cause some major paint wear fromt he harshness of the tarp. I guess if its in storage it wouldnt matter seeing as theres no wind (obviously) but then why would you need a tarp at all then if its shelterd?

Oh and what id done latley is re mount my transcooler and remove my front fascia and rear quarter flares for repainting and got new headlights and foglights all of wich have been painted with black trim around them, and the glass headlights will soon have black vynal around them so it dont have to worry about peeling

You know honestly, I was stuck driving our '88 Beretta GT 3.1/5spd for 2-3 week while the TGP was taken apart and by the end, I hated driving, I'm just not a 5spd person anymore at all, it bugs me.  To much of a pain in the ass for me, I do mostly city driving and the fact I can just drive an automatic manually shifting gears and be just as good off :icon_razz:

I got my car apraised so I can try to avoid a salvage title marker. Replaced 2 rims when the wife wrecked it. And have let it sit since. Wheel bearings are shot from the wife hitting the curb.

yeah i hear ya.  i have to admit driving my GS has been a relief.  for a city driven daily driver a 5-speed can get old after awhile.  i like having both though :icon_mrgreen:

Let's see....

Changed:

Spark plugs
Spark plug wires
Ignition coils
Ignition control module
Oil return line
Battery terminal bolts
Thermostat
Lower heater hose
Radiator (with one from the old parts car)
Transmission cooler lines
Sub-frame bolts, retainers, upper and lower bushings, and spacers.

I might be forgetting some things....

I just bought my TGP three weeks ago, so I haven't done much to it, but here is what I have done so far:

Cleaned and detailed the interior and carpet-cleaned the carpet.  I couldn't believe how clean it came.  :icon_biggrin:
Washed and waxed the exterior.  She's really shiny now!   :icon_cool:
On my to do list:
change my oil & oil filter
replace my driver's side door handle :willy_nilly:
put in new prior reman. PMIII
replace my exhaust crossover with new Jeff M. crossover
buy & put in Kenny chip and 180 thermostat
put on K&N air filter and crankcase breather
figure out why my tranny shifts 1st gear to 2nd gear so hard
clean out my TB and all EGR passages
replace my oil pump drive seal (and throttle body gasket while I'm at it.)
clean TB and all sensors & passages in/around it
replace all of my sensors
replace my plugs, wires, caps
replace my fuel injectors with ford 19# injectors
replace my mufflers
remove gutted cat and replace with a straight piece of pipe
drain, flush, and refill my fluids
clean my engine bay  :icon_rolleyes:
wash the underside of the car and undercoat it
replace my foglights and sidemarkers with ones from the 89 model year (with black trim around them)
paint or put some kind of trim around my headlights (to look like 89's)
I'm gonna stop with the list now cuz yeah that is a lot to do!   :icon_eek:   :willy_nilly:

replace my mufflers with flowmasters

Flowmasters aren't the *best* muffler choice for turbocharged vehicles, I would go with something w/ a more straight-through design like a Dynomax or Magnaflow muffler.

the wheels are from a 94 rx7, only weigh 15.5lbs per wheel, but i did neeed wheel adapters/spacers (minimal weight gain and its all centralized, so not much loss in performance with spacers, still a loss in rotating mass over stock by 3lbs per wheel or so)......i had a trial run with some spacers i picked up very cheap but were far to big (2in) but i noticed that the rears were less flush (with the fender edge) than the fronts (spacers equal) so i went with 1.25in spacing for the fronts and 1.5in for the rear...worked perfectly...the wheels come out more much more flush to the fender now and it looks way better than how the stocker were tucked way under!! pics to come!! already had some nice coments from friends and strangers...which is a relief because i wasn't so sure how black on red would work!  kinda want 18s again now though!  the eagles are oustanding tires...unreal in rainy weather especially!!  but even on dry day they are a 100x better than the stock goodyears!  need to run them above 45lbs to really get good cornering out of them!

they aren't quite 5x115 they are 5x114.3....thats why i mentioned i need the wheel adapters...the rx7 wheels are a +50mm offset so you need some good size spacers to get them back out to to even stock..

yeah im working on pictures of the car with the wheels on and scan of my dyno sheets...i think they may have been lost!  along with my last 1/4mi time slips....what a waste of $$$ for the dyno if they were tossed!

i'm in the middle of doing a bunch of stuff to my TGP powered Cutlass...

- replacing turbo (with another stocker) because the old one smoked at idle not to mention it was only held onto the crossover pipe with 3 bolts (stripped hole in crossover pipe-to-turbine flange).  unfortunately two of the SHCS that were used to fasten the downpipe to the turbine stripped out :icon_mad: so i had to pull the turbo out with the downpipe still attatched.  thankfully i have an extra TGP downpipe laying around.  i'll never use SHCS for the downpipe ever again.  the small 6mm head strips out way too easily and IMO are more difficult to reach than regular HHCS.

- replacing the downpipe bracket on the rear cylinder head.  the old bracket had a stripped hole on the dowpipe side.  unfortunately one of the holes in the rear cylinder head is stripped out.  i'm not going to be able to tap that out until i have the engine out of the car.  i'm hoping it doesn't cause any rattling/false KR problems.

- finally put my TGP specific fuel lines in (the flexible ones that are shaped to keep them further away from the turbine).  i previously had regular NA 3.1 fuel lines in that were bent upwards to keep away from the turbine heat.

- with the TGP specific fuel lines i finally have room to put the cruise control back in!

- installed the vacuum ball from my TSTE (old one broke completely off)

- new under-plenum vacuum harness.  having CC again is going to rock!

- installed a TGP specific heater core supply pipe so the heater core is no longer supplied by the line that is supposed to feed the TB heater.  i can now bypass the TB heater the correct way with the 'L' shaped bypass hose.

- found a bellhousing bolt completely loose and backed out almost 1/4" so i tightened that up

- new O2 sensor, probably going to get a 3 or 4 wire this time

- new K&N cone filter & T-bolt clamp (worm gear clamp ripped the filter neck)

- getting rid of EGR completely.  i'll probably just take the crossover pipe to the local exhaust shop so they can cut off the EGR bung and weld it up.  while i have the plenum off i'm going to tap the EGR hole so i can install a vacuum distribution block there.

- also replacing some of the turbo lines with spares i have that are in better condition

i think that's about it.  unfortunately i still won't be able to drive the car when i'm done :icon_neutral:  i haven't driven the car since June 14th.  since then it's gotten a TON of new parts though.

I put a turboxs boost controller on my STE.  Runs like a champ, with 0kr, 11.5psi boost, and 16 degrees of timing at WOT on 87 octane.  At least I'm having a LITTLE fun driving it.  Still not fast, but next year with the 5 speed, turbo, and injectors, and probably doing some 1.6 roller rockers, hopefully a front mount, and redoing some of my halfassed swap stuff.

Unfortunately I'm gonna have to get my own boost controller (oh damn, gonna have to spend $5 at home depot  :icon_lol:) when my friend puts a new bottom end in his civic and needs the boost controller back.  Before he blew it up for the second time this year it ran VERY VERY well, it walked hard on my GP GT (probably 4 cars to 80mph).  The first time it scattered and it was his fault (18psi + 11.8:1 compression = not good, even though he was running 110 octane).  This time he had less compression (11:1) and less boost (13psi), and was still running 110 octane, and the setup was actually pretty good, it just went lean for a split second and thats all it took.  Fortunately this time it just put a chip in the #4 piston.  That cylinder makes 60psi and the others are all around 210 IIRC.

I kicked the Prior remanned PM III out of my car and went back to GM parts. so far I got a new pressure switch and rebuilt the unit with a different pump. not sure, might need an accumulater eventually.

I think I got it to stop leaking though. Its been in and out like 5 times in the last month. turns out the rear caliper was leaking so we put on new calipers, rotors and pads.

Just opend the hood to make sure the motor was still there and checked the oil. Went and got a 12 foot 2x6 and stuffed it in through the back. Only had about 2' sticking out. Amazing.

First time in a month that I have driven it.

I'll keep you posted on the next major thing I do. ;)

Temps are starting to drop, when ya' racing again Jud? ;) I'm planning on making a few runs w/ my slow TGP in October or November when it cools off even more. I want to beat my old 14.7 and my old 92mph trap speed...then I'm going to a "good" track to try to shave off some more time.

Don't really know Matt. I guess I need to get my ass in gear and find out why I only have 60# of FP. Can't run on that. Think is the RRFR which means I have to send it off to get it fixed. I have enough pressure with the return line blocked to blow the rail off the injectors. Just fixed that. That's a test that didn't work to well.  :icon_sad:

Your right I guess it has been about a year since I laid down my best run although I did put down a 1.9 60' and 8.49 at the 1/8 mile track. Stickest track I've ever been on. Had a little trouble at the line so I didn't send you that one. Don't really belive it. Think it might have been the back tires. When I get a good one that I trust you will be the first to know.

Kinda wainting for Jeff (kuntzie) to make a move since he is the only one close and then Kenny could give him the fastest TGP award, but only for a little while don't plan on letting him keep it for long. Only flogged on mine for about 6 runs to get my best time. I'am pretty sure there is alot to go, like at least 5# and some gas

I would say a 14.7 is pretty respectable.

Jeff keep pluging away. GET A FRIGGING CLUTCH THAT SLIPS, THERE OUT THERE. Had one, read about them and loved them. Sooooooo easy on the drive line. I am afraid to run for fear of breaking an axel and you will have bought all of them in the world. :icon_biggrin:

Engine bay paint's almost done. Just hope it didn't scratch easy.

Subframe's sitting in a pool be electrolysized. Really slow going.

Heads are getting rebuilt with LS6 springs, and my flywheel is getting resurfaced. Need some money so I can go pick them up, they're probably done by now.

That's pretty much it lately. Unfortunetly I need to dump about $250 into the Cutlass to get it inspected so the STE's moving real slow as of late. I can't stand it.

Good luck this weekend Jeff, hope you can pull it off. Try and keep it together. I'll take it back when I get
around to it. :icon_lol: I don't mind being second fastest for awhile.

Yes I saw your dyno run. Thought the HP would be a little more. Think something was wrong with the test or your motor. The 3800 peak and then the rapid fall indicates something is wrong. But then again I have never run 18 psi. If nothing wrong with test or motor I would say the turbo is maxed and it's pumping hot air. Just my opinion, don't really know why but it aint right. :icon_rolleyes:

How much for one of these said chips you are talking about there with just a few different changes?  I could really use another chip right now to switch between to determine any issues with drivability since the TG160 chip grew legs....

As soon as it is dialed in for timing it will be $450. Considering it will spank the pants off of anything else out there...sorry Dave ;)...and a minimum of a 50+ HP and 50ft/lbs increase it is well worth it.

i haven't gotten much done recently :icon_frown: i miss driving the Turbo Cutty so much.  i'm not too enthused about modding my Regal or GTS really...i just want to take my Cutlass to the next level!  buying my Regal and my GTS this summer put a huge delay in the Cutlass project  :icon_rolleyes: but hopefully soon i can dive in and finally get some work done.

anyways, i'm hoping to bring the 3400 down to the machine shop SOON to have the block & crank checked out so i know for sure it will be a good candidate for a rebuilt.  hopefully it is, and then it's time to start spending money!  i'm shooting for 350whp pushing 12psi.  with forged pistons i should be able to boost up to 20psi with a T3/T04E and good FMIC.  i think the only thing TGP specific i'll be using will be the wiring harness, ECM and modified TGP code.

i finally got my Cutlass in my garage tonight.  i put the car up on jackstands and removed the entire stock single outlet exhaust system so i could install the dual outlet exhaust from my old TSTE.  i still need to cut the driver's side of the rear bumper for the other outlet (and mount the muffler hanger) but it looks MUCH better with dual outlets :icon_biggrin:  i also removed both rear strut/coilover assemblies.  i already have new KYB GR-2 struts and KYB strut mounts ready to go in but i still need to order an FFP coilover kit.  i also removed the new GM balljoints which are now trashed due to the NAPA balljoint press i used on them.  the press seems to have distorted the threads on the stud.  i'm going to try running a die down the threads before ordering new ones.  hopefully that will do the trick.

i just dropped off my TGP crossover pipe at the local exhaust shop to have the EGR bung completely removed and welded up.  now i gotta drill out the EGR passage in the plenum for 1/2" NPT and stick a plug in there.  later on i'm going to remove the plug and mount a vacuum distribution block in it's place.

i also talked to him about chopping off the T25 flange & the short extention just before the flange so i could get a T3 flange on there.  he seemed to think he could replace the short T25 sized extension with a larger T3 sized one along with a T3 flange as long as i supplied him with the flange :)  not sure on price but i've given them alot of buisness in the past so hopefully it won't be too much.

i also mentioned building turbo 3400 headers but that sounded like it would take ALOT of shop time, IOW uber expensive.

Yea, it kept me busy for a while. That starter was a PITA to replace.
We got the accumulator with the car when we bought it. The PO bought it before he had the Prior PM III installed. I still need to bleed the MC, but it runs every 2 pushes now instead of every push with the Prior Accumulator.

i finally got my new GM greaseable balljoints installed today.  i used a die to clean up the threads and it worked great!  i bought some new castle nuts and cotter pins and i also had to buy 45* zerk fittings from NAPA because the straight fittings that came with the balljoints would have been impossible to access.  anyways, i am SOOOOO relieved i didn't have to buy new balljoints!

i just picked up my crossover pipe from the exhaust shop.  i had them completely remove the EGR bung and weld it up :icon_mrgreen:  the guy told me for around $50 he could cut off the T25 flange (and the T25-sized extension between the flange and pipes) and weld on T3 sized extension and T3 flange for about $50.  i think i'm gonna do it.

in the last week (in the order i can best remember too)

oops forgot one..... got a MBC

1.   broke an axle at the track
2.   fixed axle at track
3. left the track then broke an axle, wasnt even really beating on it
4. towed it ~120 miles home (free with CAA)
5. got another axle for the car
6. broke that axle, and this time it fucked up my transmission, the axle broke and smaked into the case (im assumming) and the housing has approx 6x3" hole in it.
7. took out the tranny to find........................... my clutch disc is fubarred, where the splines are the hole center thingy is completely loose, WHICH EXPLAINS EVERYTHING
8. installed a OEM clutch aswell as a rebuilt getrag 284 (yes another one)
9. since i had to take the turbo off again anyways, i took it apart and  bored out the outlet to make clearance around the turbine wheel for better flow, as Skalor( Josh) did that on the stock turbo and said it seemed to help alot.
10. i relowered the front of my car
11. replace my tie-rod ends with greesable ones
12. replace my balljoints with greesable ones (greese nippe fitting makes for a fight fit for actually greasing them)
13. put the turbo back together and adjusted it for the FMIC ive been wanting to get the piping installed in

14- to come tomorrow- putting a new set of tires on the car (i know its late in the season, but there in my garage already and all 4 of mine are getting preety worn... have no idea what causes that

Got the new GM TPS sensor installed, as well as the heated O2.
I had to notch out the mounting screw holes in the TPS sensor so I could adjust it down to the proper voltage. The car idles perfectly now, and I can tell the new O2 is making a difference in how it runs too.

Now comes the fun of pulling the motor from the GTP..

i got a ton of things done to the Turbo Cutlass today.  at first i didn't really feel like working on the car but thought i'd at least install the downpipe.  well....i ended up almost finishing everything :icon_mrgreen:

installed:

- downpipe
- new (used) turbo and all oil/coolant lines
- lower intercooler pipe
- finally installed a good/complete vacuum line harness
- installed plenum and throttle body with new gaskets
- cruise control!  haven't had that installed in a lonnnng time :)

all i have left to do is buy a TB heater bypass hose and an O2 sensor, then install the upper intercooler pipe and charge the battery.  then go get the new exhaust welded up.  feels good to make a lot of progress.  i should be driving the car again real soon :icon_biggrin:

since my last post  ^  i have:

- installed the O2 sensor, TB heater bypass hose, upper intercooler pipe and i had to buy a new battery.  i also got the exhaust welded up so the car is now running!!

- had to drill and tap one of the bolt holes for the waterneck in the LIM since i stripped it out.  all fixed now though.

- drilled & tapped the two bolt holes on the radiator support for the strut tower-to-radiator support crossbrace.  i stripped them out a long time ago :icon_redface:  the brace is now functional once again (do i suck or what? LOL).

- got halfway through installing my new KYB strut cartridges only to find out the tool i rented from Checker will NOT work with the KYB struts :icon_mad:  thankfully Dave was kind enough to rent me his GM W-body strut tool so i'll have that finished up shortly.  so...the car isn't actually driveable yet.  after that is done it goes to the shop for a 4 wheel alignment.

- got the car insured and renewed my registration so it's all legit

- ordered this vacuum distribution block (http://turbosunleashed.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=136&products_id=269) from TurbosUnleashed which will be installed where the vacuum EGR used to be.

- just bought a 5 quart jug of Mobil-1 10w30, NAPA Gold oil filter and NAPA Gold fuel filter

- just ordered (2 minutes ago lol) a new K&N RU-1770 air filter from Summit, and a 2.5" SS T-bolt clamp from ATPturbo.com

then it's off to KAZ Motorsports for some tuning :icon_cool:

Well since I purchased in October:
Plugs, wires, PCV, serpentine belt, tires, motor mounts with poly upgrade, fixed ABS cable, soldered gauge cluster, lighted intercooled turbo mod, complete brake fluid change, front pads, rear passenger hub, coolant flush, AC fin mod, re-mounted valance with S.S hardware, K+N on turbo / relocate coolant overflow, Kenny crossover, Kenny chip, o2 sensor, Kenny turbo oil return line, Magnaflow mufflers, repaired vacumm leak, clean throttle body, headlight mascara ,stereo head unit, wash, wax, detail. I'm sure I missed stuff so I'll just keep a running list here as I remember.

Next on list:
Steering wheel controls, speakers, carpet trim, sound proofing.

since my last post  ^  i have:

- installed the O2 sensor, TB heater bypass hose, upper intercooler pipe and i had to buy a new battery.  i also got the exhaust welded up so the car is now running!!

- had to drill and tap one of the bolt holes for the waterneck in the LIM since i stripped it out.  all fixed now though.

- drilled & tapped the two bolt holes on the radiator support for the strut tower-to-radiator support crossbrace.  i stripped them out a long time ago :icon_redface:  the brace is now functional once again (do i suck or what? LOL).

- got halfway through installing my new KYB strut cartridges only to find out the tool i rented from Checker will NOT work with the KYB struts :icon_mad:  thankfully Dave was kind enough to rent me his GM W-body strut tool so i'll have that finished up shortly.  so...the car isn't actually driveable yet.  after that is done it goes to the shop for a 4 wheel alignment.

then it's off to KAZ Motorsports for some tuning :icon_cool:

since then i've:

- had the new KYB GR-2 front strut cartridges installed.  i said to hell with it and had Midas do it.  i have the GM strut tool now (thanks Dave!) so when i tear into it again i can do it myself.

- had the car tuned at KAZ MotorSports of course.  i never seen the dyno charts from KAZ but from what i remember it would probably put down ~255whp & 360wtq on a DynoJet now.

- bought new AFCO Racing coilover adjuster nuts and sleeves.  i had to have a machine shop machine out the sleeves slightly to fit over the new KYB GR-2 rear struts which are now also installed

- bought new 245/50 Kumho ECSTA 711 tires (so much better looking than the 225/60s!)

- had the car aligned

- threw out my old leather seats and got much nicer cloth blue bucket seats from a '90 International sedan

- installed a complete steering column from a '90 Cutlass Supreme International so i now have steering wheel radio controls (once i get the PAC SWI-X that is)

- currently in the middle of installing a new Walbro 255 fuel pump.

next up are the Ford Yellow Top injectors, hacking off the old crusty/clogged mufflers, and then getting it re-tuned at KAZ.  i also need to replace the KYB jounce bumper/strut boots up front since they're not compatible with the amount of drop the front Intrax springs provide.  i could cut them shorter but that would mean cutting off the boot since it's an integrated piece.  i'm going to have to buy some stock type Monroe jounce bumpers and cut about an inch off of them, and buy some stock type Monroe strut boots.  after that the car will finally be lowered in the front (it's sitting on the jounce bumpers right now preventing the car from sitting as low as it should) and then all i need to do is re-adjust my rear coilovers so the car sits LOW and level!

Cut them the ghetto way...aka zip tieing the boots back to the jounce bumpers.

I recharged the TGP's battery since I killed the battery by leaving the interior lights on the other day, first time I've done that in years. :icon_redface:

i actually just bought new jounce bumpers and strut boots from Checker today.  McQuay-Norris was the brand; about $45 altogether for both sides.  the jounce bumper and boots are separate unlike the KYB stuff so i'm just going to cut 1.5" off the jounce bumpers and then the Cutlass will finally sit 1.5" lower in front like it's supposed to (just look at Ryan's TGP :icon_eek: ) and then all i have to do is adjust the rear coilovers down 1.5" so it sits level.  and it won't be riding on the jounce bumpers like it does now so the ride should be MUCH better.  i can't wait to finally see it LOW and LEVEL like i've been wanting for so long now.

- Crank Positioning Sensor
- Removed EGR as it's disabled anyways (also plugged the vac tube that was leaking)

- Replaced upper and lower Motor Mounts
- O2 Sensor
- Replaced Tranny T-Check Valve
- New Radiator (stemmed from the shop puncturing the old one while replacing the lower motor mount)
- Fuel Filter
- Transmission T-Tech Flush
- BRAND NEW ECM
- And the alternator
- New brakes all around
- Steering rack

- Optima Red Top Battery

Avoid them for ANY vehicle that has a 'waste-a-spark' ignition system.

Then again, they're junk on Dodge magnum motors as well, and they have distributors.  :icon_rolleyes: I'm actually not sure what platinum plugs are good for.  :icon_neutral:

supposedly they are good for 100,000 miles, but whatever.  GM actually used platinum plugs in the newer 3400 engines and probably all of their other engines.  wierd.

anyways,  today i:

- fixed the P/N safety switch wiring for good so it no longer cuts out at 3000 RPM.

- replaced a fuel tank strap bolt & clip i stripped out while installing the fuel tank yesterday.  the guy at the salvage yard gave it to me for free which was nice.  also nice that the bolt & clip i stripped out was the one right above the fuel filter - the only one that's easy to get to.

car seems faster than ever :icon_biggrin:  i am really wanting to order the Ford Racing Yellow Top injectors ASAP now that the Walbro 255 fuel pump is in and then go get it tuned again at KAZ MotorSports (and it won't have the rusted to shit stock TSTE mufflers in there either....i'll sawzall them off the day before the dyno if i have to).  i wonder what whp/wtq i could manage at 14psi?  i want to get it tuned at KAZ and then afterwards dyno it DynoPros in Denver to see what it would put down on a DynoJet since DynoJet numbers are kind of the 'standard' when it comes to bench racing about dyno numbers, even though the DynoDynamics numbers are far more realisitic.  HOPEFULLY next summer i can finally take it to the dragstrip.  maybe i could get a 14.99 @ 95mph up here at 4900 ft   i'd probably get a 2.7 second 60ft unless i get staged boost control going.....yet another thing on my to-do list.

i still want to trade the car for a '92-'95 SSEi but that's very unlikely so i guess i'll just plan on keeping it and modding it further...

I recently put in a K&N filter on the turbo, did a coolant flush, front rotors and pads, and rear calipers and pads.

Well I have parts, and more on the way.

Topgun 160
160 Thermostat
Fuel Filter
24# Fuel Injectors
Lumina 3100 Fan and Motor
Plugs & Wires
3 Coil Packs
Coil Module
Alternator
Serpentine Belt
Stuff to change the oil

I think that is everything, and now I'm broke. I still need to get a TV Cable, X Over, and rad in the future... hopefully spring break when I put all that in. This car better run likes its brand new when I'm done and not give me anymore problems for a while. I wanna go to the track this summer... never been before.

Edit: Oh and i seafoamed the car  :icon_mrgreen: and i will be either gutting the cat getting a new one, and cleaning and replacing the grounds.

FWIW you can use a TV Cable from ANY 3.1 4T60 car. It doesn't have to be turbo specific. Just wrap it with header wrap where it goes between the turbo and the x-over.
Title: Re: What have you done to your TGP/TSTE lately?

Title: Re: What have you done to your TGP/TSTE lately?
Post by: GOT2B GM on February 23, 2007, 05:39:06 AM
On the plenum side, disconnect the cable just like a throttle cable. You may have to remove some of the cable guides on the back of the plenum to do this. On the transmission side, remove the one retaining bolt, and then pull up on the cable. You will see a metal hook on the end of the cable, that is clipped into a little eyelet. Disconnect the hook from the eyelet.  Reverse for installation.
Title: Re: What have you done to your TGP/TSTE lately?
Post by: TGPilot on February 23, 2007, 08:27:56 AM
Be very careful the eyelet does not fall down into the transmission where you can not get to it!

subframe and control arms are half painted, should be ready to go in by friday if weather/time holds out.

cleaning/relooming the injector harness before the plenum goes on, once the motor's together I'll finish up the rest of the harness. it's almost ready to go in.

d'oh. need a balljoint and tie rods though. not to mention a full brake job and new SS lines.

I got my x-over in the mail a few days ago.  When I got it, it was dirty since it was used  but like an idiot, I forgot to take pics of the "before" x-over.

Today, I cleaned the x-over up.  I wire wheeled it for an hour to get all the crap off of it and get it down to bare metal, then I painted it.
Here are some pics of the end result:

I wonder how long it will take for that paint to melt and break off, my guess is about 3 minutes.

That pipe gets so damn hot I wouldn't think it would last very long.  I tried it on mine with some woodstove paint, it worked on the manifolds pretty well, I put about 8 coats of it on there and its starting to rust through again, but theres no way in hell I'm taking it off just for that, maybe I'll just tape it off and give it another spray.

As for what I've done lately, I put in a new battery and started it.

Going to re attach the rearview mirror, clean it and wax it, and then let it sit again.  Someone buy this car from me please.

Let's kill the suspense people. Here's what I did:

Turbo smoked out....sooooooooo, I thought about this...If I'm gonna do something right, I may as well make it the way I like. So I did.

Stage 3 BIG T28 Hybrid Turbo
- Stage 3 BIG Compressor and turbine wheels
- 360 degree thrust bearing to replace the stock 270 degree
- Ported and polished
- All this wrapped up inside a T25 shell

This is my new baby :icon_biggrin:

Lots of pics, and none of them really do it justice. It's not a submarine turbo that the Canadians seem to buy lol (j/k Jeff), but it's damn nice not to have to do any line mods! LOL so thats my big surprise...I really recommend GPopShop, www.gpopshop.com....they pay EXCELLENT attention to detail and kept constant communication every step of the way!

Well, what does everyone think?

Don't mean to be nosey, but how much did that set you back?

also, did you send in your stocker for the core and they just rebuilt/upgraded that?

I'm kind of considering doing that.. but I may have bigger problems. The cracks in my turbine housing are spreading big time around the waste gate. I know it's typical but they're getting back, not to mention I need two helicoils for the downpipe side. Maybe I'll just take it apart and ask if anyone has a turbine housing.

Standard rebuild on our T25's are about $250. I sent mine in and they rebuilt it...My cost? Ummm, hehe $1033, after shipping and everything I listed. They can get you new housings, too!

Damn, you got taken to the cleaners.  :icon_sad:The GT28 I bought about 3 years ago was 975 and its 3 times yours is. The biggest GT style that has the 28 base was about 1200 and its 5 times the stock 28. Both of these were + about 100 for the WGA.

Just a word to every one on here. There is a wealth of knowledge on this board, use it before a major purchase.

I can't stand somebody getting screwed. :icon_evil:

Jud

PS, don't forget to check the clearance from that big exducer to the down pipe, may require some grinding so the exducer isn't shrouded. Some people would say thats hacking but if your afraid to grind you shouldn't attempt to modify anything.

Today, I put my shiny crossover and turbo back in my TGP.  I cleaned the turbo up and all fittings, poly taped all the threads, and put new o-rings in the orifices.  Then I charged my battery.  I started it this evening for the first time in a while and watched the WD-40 steam off my engine lol.
Title: Re: What have you done to your TGP/TSTE lately?
Post by: grinders_18 on April 13, 2007, 11:02:55 PM
The only ONLY reason I stuck with a rebuild instead of buying brand new (and yes I gave it a LOT of thought), was that I didn't wanna deal with the custom parts...modifying anything at all. I wanted to be able to take it out on my own, have it rebuilt, and re-install it on my own....all of which I did. Indeed it is a lot of money, and I very well could have, and maybe time will show should have, bought brand new. But I knew what I was doing, I knew the amount of money, and I knew that it was still considered small. So if I did, in fact, get screwed, I did it to myself lol. However, in the end what matters is that I'm happy with it, and I tell you what I'm totally satisfied.

I do appreciate the concern, but I did take your advice and I looked around. It boiled down to me not wanting to wait forever to have it done. Since I have no tools for any of the custom work, it would have cost MORE to go the brand new route, if it needed a shop to do the work. Maybe there is one that would have bolted right in, but I selected exactly what I had done for good reasons.

Also, the paint they used on my turbo, not sure what it is.....but it is still in the same condition as when I put it in...nothing has boiled off, and when I put my hand on it after my two hour trip to South Dakota, it was hardly warm at all! Not sure how, but I'm not complaining.

Nick! Great to hear you got it all back together! I wanna see it running great and looking great next weekend! :icon_cool:

Well if thats the case and your happy with it :thumb: Thats all that really matters. The coating looks to be ceramic. Tough stuff, I have that on my headers.

I guess Jeff is super mechanic  :icon_razz: took me an hour just to drill and tap the o2 in the down pipe + about $40 for tools, but I'm getting old and don't work as fast as I used to. I was in an uncharted area. Gasket matching the 3071 to the DP took alot of grinding. The exducer bore was cut into the housing over 1/8".

Have fun

I replaced my tv cable about a week ago.

Also left a little rubber on the road ...normal takeoff aka flooring it and computer laggggggg, spool, and then wheelspin. It's hard to see, but the marks go all the way to where my white car is parked, they just get lighter down that way. That was the first time I had floored it from a stop in a few months, it did not use to spin that much with just flooring it(almost makes me want to try a spooled up launch, but I'll save that for the track ;) )

Ok, so I finally got around to getting the pictures of my 3 days long, literally, wax job on the car. Every inch was detailed, from the exterior, to the jambs, small tiny tiny places, underside of the hood, engine bay...etc...Well, follow the link and let me know what you think! 3 coats of Liquid Glass and Maguires detailing spray, plus a base cleaner my friend borrowed from his tractor implement shop...really helped to bring out the color before the wax! Sorry it wasn't that sunny out when I took the pictures.

Since February, I had been in contact with the local auto program at South Central College, about 25 miles from me. We've hit road bumps, and he called me last Tuesday while I was working the afternoon shift, and I got his message at 10 PM, saying if I wanted it painted yet this year, I'd need to drop it off Wednesday morning LOL. I'm like yeah thanks for the warning. No ride there and back? No thanks. I'll wait. They were going to charge $250 to repaint the hood and lower valance; the cheapest any other shop in town will charge (that does a half ass decent job) is $540 for the hood alone. So needless to say, I can live with it for now.

Today I put in my new five-o motorsport C302 injectors.  WOW what a HUGE difference they make!!  The car has twice as much power everywhere, it IDLES :icon_eek: , it doesn't die anymore or idle hunt, it shifts ULTRA smooth, even though my lower motor mount is blown... I can barely feel it shift now!  It doesn't smoke anymore either!  Finally my smoking problem is solved!  The car literally drives like it is brand new now!

I also replaced the PCV valve, cleaned my throttle body, and cleaned my intake manifolds inside and out while it was all apart.  Runs WONDERFUL now! :icon_twisted:

After all this I gave it a bath too. :icon_cool:

also started swapping the strut towers between the Cutlass/STE (Cutlass has '96+ brakes). The STE's hubs were shot (BAD) so I'm swapping the still decent ones (they'll still be in the Cutlass, just in a different set of strut towers). what a fucking pain in the ass that's been.

Also took apart one of the newer towers to get start cleaning/rebuilding it. They'll get sandblasted/POR-15ed, new hubs, new spring bearing plates, Intrax lower springs, new mounts, new calipers and new GR2s before they go back in the STE. I haven't decided on rotors yet.

after that nightmare is over and the Cutlass is back together, I get to figure out the whole 282/ABS axle problem  :gr_guns:

it's a nice car for sure, it definetely needs the loving touch of a good body man with a minor amount of paint and a buffer.  other than that this thing is pretty solid.  it runs great and the A/C is now ice cold.  i'd really like to get rid of that car so if anyone is interested, or knows someone interested in a TGP send them my way.

i haven't really done anything to my Turbo Cutlass lately.  i haven't even driven it since March or so.  i tried to sell it to a friend, but he couldn't come up with the rest of the money he owed me so i took the car back.  untortunately it was abused for the month that he had it :icon_rolleyes:  he broke an axle right in half the first week he had it.  he even told me he had the car up to 148mph once.  jeez.  anyways, stuff i need to fix:

- replace the bump stops (it was riding on the KYB bump stops that were previously in the car - they were just too tall for the amount of drop the new Intrax springs provided)

- replace LIM since i stripped out one of the thermostat bolt holes (oops).  i'm going to install the 1.6 rocker arms while i'm at it.

- get the 282 resealed.  it's leaking fluid BAD from where the bellhousing meets the case.  i should probably upgrade the clutch while the trans is out.

i miss driving it!  i'm in the middle of doing a bunch of suspension stuff to my Regal (SSC lowering springs, KYB AGX adjustable struts, new KYB strut mounts, new motor/trans mounts, poly dogbone bushings etc).  hopefully i can start in on the Cutlass soon after the Regal is done.  i have the engine/trans ready to pull out, i just need to pull the hood off and hook up the hoist.

Well, here's an update of what's been replaced lately:

- Plugs, AC Delco Rapid Fire's
- MSD 8.5 mm Super Conductor Plug wires
- New coolant lines
- New Fuel Filter
- much more I forget right now.

Put exterior cleaning on hold because I was getting bored/tired of it, and started cleaning the interior. It's coming out great so far, the rear carpet/seats reallly cleaned up and the front doesn't look too bad. Also got more wiring done; I have wires for each fan running up to the center console, as well as the A/F gauge power wire. I cut the DIC ignition power wire too, they're all going to be on seperate switches in the spot where the ashtray's supposed to be. The DIC just gets way too annoying with the beeping sometimes lol. I need to finish wiring my A/F gauge out to the engine compartment, and I still need to hook up the power and the ground for my heated O2 sensor. My aftermarket radio's in (Sony MEX-BT2500) and my PAC 5 SWC adaptor is almost hardwired. Something's wrong with my factory amp though.

The amp was fine, then one I day I turned the (factory) radio off, and then back on a second later, and a deep annoying pulsing sound was coming from the rear speakers. I unplugged the amp and it went away. I plugged in the amp from the TGP and it sounds better than not having an amp, but it doesn't have all the channels that the STE one did. According to the FSM, the pins that are missing on the TGP one are the wires for the rear speakers in the STE  so I dunno if it was an amp or a wiring problem.

I also got my Moates USB data logging cable 8) but I haven't had a chance to give it a try yet.

Bumping this up again..

Since I last posted in here, I have done the following to my TGP:

Waxed and detailed the car probably 10-15 times
Let it sit for like 9 months
Tore most of the engine bay apart and CLEANED EVERYTHING
Took throttle body, upper intake manifold, lower intake manifold, and valve covers off (cleaned them and repainted the 3.1 Intercooled Turbo)
Installed NEW hydraulic lifters
Cleaned all pushrods and rocker arms in chemdip (no more varnish on the parts!)
Installed 1.6 rocker arms and guide plates
New lower intake gasket
New Upper intake gasket
New valve cover gaskets
New TB gasket
New knock sensor
New Crank Position Sensor
New ICM
New Coils
New Sparkplug Wires
New plugs AC/Delco R42LTS
New MAT sensor
New K&N with outerwear on turbo
New trans modulator & check valve
TB coolant bypass
Cleaned TB and sensors
Re-adjusted TV cable (shifting at 5,120 RPM FTW)
Removed original alternator and brought to local alternator shop, had them upgrade the internals to High amp 180-200 AMP
Installed heavy duty charge wiring from alt to battery
New ground cables
New Battery Cables
New Battery (again!  It has been fine now that grounds have been replaced)
New Power Steering Pump (wow x-laces are hard to turn with no PS in parking lots! :icon_eek: )
Coolant Flush
New ECM
KAZ Motorsports Hot Tune Chip
Installed Gen 1 DSM BOV
Removed Intercooler, all piping, and couplers and cleaned them.
Detailed Engine bay after final assembly

I'm sure there is more I'm forgetting...

Driven it 790 miles since top end rebuild and full tune-up.

overheated! :willynilly: major air in the system, come to find out the seal on top of the water pump is completely shot. Tranny is also either incredibly crappy as well, or I just have some major vacuum problems still, both are very possible. I have a 5 speed coming soon though, so that'll eliminate on part of that  :icon_mrgreen:

Ummm, well, I sold her.

Still trying to decide how I feel about that.

Drove by where they are stored at and saw the TGP had two flat tires (took off my Enki rims and put on some Monte rims & used tires for storage).

I drove my TGP one last time today, then cleaned her up and parked her in the garage.  Will be putting it on jackstands, disconnecting the battery, and putting on the car cover tomorrow. :icon_sad:  It has been a fun 1,043.5 miles this summer on the fresh top end.  I'll be back for it in 20 months.

Time to bump this again. :icon_wink:

-Washed/waxed both TGP's.

-Fixed the passenger side hood louver on the red car(mounting tabs up front broke off). I made one new tab(from a 3/8'' x .171 x 1'' nylon spacer that I modded) and reused one of the original tabs. I epoxied them to the louver with some 5 minute Permatex "permapoxy." I've open/shut the hood about 10 times since and the tabs are still holding strong. If anyone wants more info on fixing them, let me know. Now I need to remove the driver's side louver and repair the crack in it...

-Fabricated a cold air intake modeled after Adam's(flybynite) for my red car. It's a *prototype* right now, I'm waiting on one mandrel bend to get here to completely finish it.

-In the process of installing a 91-93 style coolant overflow bottle. I have it installed now, I just need to drill and tap a hole in the strut tower to completely finish the installation. Right now I have a junkyard coolant bottle in the car, I'm going to order a new one from GM(if they still have them) as the old one looks horrible.

-AC "Fin mod" on the red car.

-Cleaned out the intercooler. It wasn't really dirty at all to begin with. :icon_razz:

I don't have anywhere to store it here, so its stuck in MN for a while.  Its in a good place for now. ;)

I don't think I'm going to stay in AZ after I graduate in ~16 months.  I want to check out the east coast a bit, so I may move to Florida or Georgia.  I'll let the TGP sleep while I explore.

Just out of curiosity, how much is the black paint? I priced some paint for the red TGP and the supply store I called told me it was $117 per quart. I'm eventually going to repaint the red car as the clear on it is getting bad. :icon_frown:

When I painted my old red TGP, 1 gallon of red was $350 or so, and I was using Dupont Chromabase... Not sure why the black would be more than that...  They also have a brand of paint called Nasons, it's also made by Dupont and is half the price of Chromabase. Nasons works well for all overs but should not be used for spot repairs...   ;)

That has nothing to do with the price   ;)   They charge you by how many colors they have to mix together to make a specified color... Red is usually the most expensive .... Silver has very little pigment and is 95% metal flake. It's one of the cheapest colors to buy...

those rke remotes are peices of junk if resoldering doesnt fix it, I had mine professionally gone over and resoldered, and it still didnt work, a remote from a Regal GS from the J/Y and  it works perfectly everytime.

I was referring to the RKE module, not the remotes. I have 3 or 4 remotes that function perfectly, my RKE module has quit working though(common problem).

sorry i ment the box is what i had resoldered, i dont belive the remotes are fixable. My problems started with the box, then it stopped working, had it done over, still no workie, new remote, it worked good, both my remotes went bad apparently. Just sayin if resoldering the box doesnt do anything for you, I had faulty remotes.

Body I used Krylon fusion red( it matches good), and duplicolor clear. Interior is testers tan, and model master military brown. I VHTed the windows and tails to make them look like my TGP.

Duplicolor has our "Bright Red" touch-up paint in spray cans that matches our original paint. ;) Search duplicolor and our paint code and you'll find it. The #'s on the actual can might be labeled differently from the paint code though IIRC. I'll look at the can I have in the garage later. I used it to spray paint some plugs that I filled the front license plate bracket holes with.

Quick Mid winter update on my TGP.  She is on the road sometimes sorry guys!  I fixed the RKE last night and added some oil  :icon_eek:  think the turbo is using a little oil and the radial clearance is out a bit  :icon_rolleyes:  Oh well.  I waxed her last night and polished the rims.  Poorboys Natty's Red Wax a quick 5 minute job!  Also have put on the BOV and made a new vacuum block clip out of some polished stainless sheet metal at work.  Oh and new hood carpet, wow I've done a lot in a few months! Probably going to put on the magnacore KV8.5 wires I have sitting in a box tonight! Enjoy!

i was bored so i slapped on a turbo that was sitting around, built by Flybynite w/ upgraded compressor,70mm wheel.   I think it works great with the 5 speed, i can actually make 15-16 psi now unlike the stock turbo.  Soon its getting clutch, 1.6 rockers and retune.

I've done nothing but an oil change to my car lately: Mobil 1 0w30 & an AC Delco PF52 filter. The 0w30 looked like water @ 91*F outside when I poured it. You can tell by the oil pressure gauge that it pumps through the engine quite a bit quicker than a 5 or 10 weight oil. The red car will be due for an oil change soon, so I'm going to put 0w30 in it also(currently have 10w30 M1 in it).

It runs again!

over the past few weeks I:
-Threw the oil pan back on it
-Threw in the new Getrag
-Replaced bushings on the shift arm
-Put the front end back together

it has no exhaust or ebrake, and the back end of the car still has a lot of rot to be dealt with unfortunetly...
I already replaced 1 brake line a while back, I have a new filler neck that needs to go in but from the looks of it I'm going to need/want new trailing arms, lateral arms, gas tank and am definitely going to need to have the body trailing arm mounts ripped out and replaced with new steel because they are rot central.

it runs halfway decent anyway, tough to tell with all the exhaust noise. It's a rough start at first though, dies a few times before the idle steadies. I think the injectors could be leaking. I need to stop fucking around and get a good new set of injectors (I think I have 3 sets of TGP injectors, 1 set of DOHC injectors and 1 set of 10 year old Ford blue tops that the car ran awful on - though I never tuned for them).

I just bought webhosting and a domain so I'll be posting repeatitive pics of it again soon enough.

the ss plates are from ebay but i built the generator from scratch. the output tube needs to be at the mouth of the turbo so it can suck in the hydrogen. if you put it on the boost side all you'll boost the generator someone has a vid on youtube if I get a chance ill make one.

The intake spacers add air capacity to the intake side. They also increase velocity at which the air travels through the intake.. The end result is extra torque and horsepower...

I bought them from TGed last year. He is a super great guy, Very easy to deal with...  Here is the link from the old group buy...

http://www.tgpforums.com/index.php/topic,4233.0.html

I had a few sets cut out for my TGP's. If there is enough interest I can have some more made... ;)

They made a good bit of difference. The car has a totally different tone from the exhaust now. Down low feels really good and more responsive but the AFR is 9 above 6lbs of boost. Still need to finish the tune.

that is where you or someone else goes into the computer or (brain) for your specific car and makes changes in the compouter to enhance performance or to fix problem areas.

KennyK (TGPilot) and Flybynite do tunes for our cars and if you dont have one get on - it will be a night and day difference!!!

**my "tune" is off now because of the 3500 UIM so the change of the air volume going into my cylinders needs to have my Air-fuel-ration changed to match it.

I've done the following to the Red TGP recently:

-Washed it

-Changed the oil

-finally finished removing a bit of residual rust from the battery tray area(today) and sprayed the battery tray with a flat black primer for now

-painted the intake plenum + front valve cover "aluminum" colored as they were both stained up. I cleaned them with several harsh cleaners and they didn't come out looking as good as I wanted them too. Nothing short of sanding it down or blasting it would have removed the staining, so I just went ahead and painted them.

-Stripped the paint/coating off the coolant bypass pipe, removed a bit of surface rust from it, and repainted it.

-cleaned up almost everything under the hood. I still need to do some more cleaning and I have plans to repaint a few more items and touch-up the red paint in several places where it's scratched up. I'll post a picture or two in the picture thread in just a few minutes...

Changed the transmission filter (which hadn't apparently been replaced... ever, because the seal was basically part of the aluminum. We needed a flat-head to get that out!), and today I'm replacing the radiator hoses to get rid of a leak and getting a valve cover breather.

Further down on the list are fixing a crimp in the steel pipe that feeds oil/water to the turbo (eek), a small hose near the heater line, and replacing the gaskets-turned-paper.

EDIT: Also bypassed the crimp with some more hosing and a cutter today.

ran my new cold air kit that i made. Ran a piece of the factory lex pipe off the turbo for the bend, then aa small piece of 2 1/2 in steel tubing, then a rubber adapter for the bigger piping, then a piece of 3 inch exhaust to the pasenger side fenderwell.(where factory air box hose ran) Finally mounted air filter behind grilles in the bumper. HUGE power increase. hope to have pics soon!

The factory flex pipe will collapse under boost if you're running more than stock boost... I would replace it with a piece of mandrel bent pipe or something similar.

The bov is a type rs. And the boost controller is just a universal 1. Not sure of the brand though. Haven't had a chance to put them on yet because of weather.

How is winter treating everybody. Things are slow on my end but nothing major has happened yet. I'm still unemployed and hoping for some good news from two interviews next week. I have had more time to work on model cars due to the fact I don't like going outside. One of my TGP models has successfully been cut into a convertible and is ready for paint. Only reason I cut it up was because the body was stressed in the roof area from poor storage of the model of the previous owner. When I get a chance I'll post some pics of the build.

My tgp and my tgp parts car are both under 3 feet of snow!  :icon_mad: In the spring ALL the interior gets ripped out and the parts car interior goes in. Seats, dash, rear package tray. It's all trashed and I have great replacement parts. Then I am sorting out why it stumbles and hesitates and runs like crap when I nail the gas. The parts car runs awesome but has a rod knock. I am swapping over the coils, fuel rail and injectors, the turbo, everything until it runs right. Then comes paint. I am VERY fortunate. A good friend of mine does classic car restorations for a living. Literally quarter million dollar restos where he works on a car for 18 months making sure every nut and bolt is perfect and polished. He does tons of work on the side at VERY reasonable prices. He has checked my car over and since it was a Texas car it has ZERO rust. He needs it for 3 weeks and $2000 and he is hooking me up with a paint job that anyone else would want 3 or 4 times more than that for. Of course, I will post pics. He is in my Camaro car club of which I am a founding member and has already painted a half dozen other members cars. His work is truly unbelievable, better than any other prep and painter I have ever seen. I so can't wait for spring! Like I said, we have already made the plans and the money is set aside. That is what I have planned for my car. Then the tgp becomes my show car and my IROC is going to become more drag strip oriented. There are more and more IROC's at the shows. I have yet to see another tgp at any shows in the New England area.

Put the TGP on the road this weekend. So far everything is good. Looks like around June 12th is when it goes in for paint. On a side note my 85 IROC's original engine finally gave out so I have to swap in a replacement engine. It's a 350 that dynoed 260 horse and 435 torque. Wont have much top end but should scream from stoplight to stoplight!  :icon_mrgreen: Glad spring is here!

Got mine out last Sunday, fired up right away. Gotta do an oil change then recheck all my vacuum line (maybe fix my cruise), install my front STB, try to get a RSTB (from w-body) and hopefully by the end of summer get it lowered.

Flybynite, do you have a thread on lowering your TGP? I read that you cut the front coils, what about the rear?

Red TGP got a new compressor, orifice tube, evap core, condenser and accumulator early this spring.  Still utilizing R12 for refrigerant.
Black TGP was brought out of storage early this spring.  Pretty much beat up on since then and seems to run good for weak 36lb tune,  A/C is still R12 and holding very well.   New larger 60mm throttle body and many other mods in process...  :icon_evil:   I see dead people no no thats 12's I see  I'm  sorry   :icon_twisted:

NOT BAD TO DO THE RIMS,, GET A DRIMAL DRILL AND compound or something to that nature and a couple beers relax and buff..unless yours still has the clear coat then you need airplane stripper and asteadyhand to keep away from the gold, i used the stripper first, then sandpaper to flatten out the grooves ,, and polished like it was chrome..

Thanks for the compliments. The problem with the rims not only lies in the lip, but one of my rims, that I had to pick u at a junkyard after hitting a pothole and destroying one of the stockers, is not in good shape. Most the inside of the gold is BLACK. I just want to get new rims all together. The funny thing is the car was filthy after sitting in the garage all winter... :)

Part of me wants to strip the whole rim, paint the inside black, and the lip red. I just have no idea how to do all that... :icon_question:

This is what I hit, now before you say WTF where you thinking, it was night, raining, a poorly lit road, and those cones weren't there yet. It actually split the rim open on the bend too... It was pretty bad.

Braided fuel lines...

Today I pulled the fins on the condenser, not nearly as hard as people make it seem, but my hands are cut up..  I also completely deleted the hoses going to the throttle body and plugged the lines, so now there is just the coolant line running to the turbo.

I wasnt sure if this was a good idea, because it was removing a bypass of coolant, but I read a post from Chris A that says theoretically it should be ok *crossing fingers*  http://www.w-body.com/archive/index.php/t-1769.html

I am also going to drill a small hole in the T-stat to hopefully ease any issues...

All of us generally post on w-body as well. Honestly it would be ideal if this would could be merged w/ the other and have all the info carry over to the TGP section there, but I'm not sure that's possible.

I like this site because it's TGP specific.  It would be good to see more traffic on here.  W-Body is good, but there is a lot of stuff there that's just interesting, but has little or no relevance to the TGP.  I have trouble getting pics to upload on this one.

i use this site mainly for reference like an encyclopedia of the TGP

It is definitely good for that.  But I enjoy seeing new stuff too.

I agree .  should have a "project/ build" section,  that would liven the place right up.

Well on my Black TGP I have soldered the broken wires for the seat adjustments for the AQ9 section, I routed a newer radio antenna wire and replaced the power antenna unit with one that works, getting ready to change the oil, and also prepping to paint the lower valance I scored last year at a junkyard.

The sad part is I found that car and we went to get him that air dam.  It was froma 92 GTP in Maui Blue with no joke 68K miles.  I really wish we could have bought the car she was pristine.

Very true the car in the yard was in much better shape then some of the cars I own. Also that car had a factory rear defrost delete.

Knock Knock, Hello TGPForums. Long time no post. I figured I would drop a line and see if anyone still comes here. Update on how things are going for my TGPs in my fleet of cars, The Black 90 that I have had for 6years now is still a daily driver sitting with about 207000 miles, I and just recently finally found the brake leak that had plagued the braking system since I have owned it. I haven't done much else at this point other than basic maintenance. I have picked up a turbo blanket and down pipe wrap that still needs to be installed. I bought LED headlights ( low and high beams) for it and they are amazing to use.

On the down side my Red 89 has been down for about 3 years do to a mistake I made while trying to do an upgrade, plus job changes funds and all of the other things life threw at me I have decided I am going to pull the plug on it and hope I can put all the good parts towards my First TGP.

So if I stop getting pulled in every other direction to work on everything else I will make some progress before the snow flies.

I still check here pretty often.  It's always a pleasant surprise to see something new.

My black 90 gets driven about 100 miles a month or so.  My red 89 is waiting for me to figure out the wiring problem.

I'm pretty sad to see that there hasn't been a post on this board in almost three months.  I got my TGP out of storage and have been slowly reassembling it.  Been ordering some parts and visiting junkyards to find some of the stuff I need but the 1st gen GPs are getting hard to find, especially the 89 - 93s.

Been daily driving my Black 90 off and on the past few years it now needs a radiator it has a steady leak and will need to address it.
