General / Re: TGP VIN Database - Website inside!
January 13, 2017, 02:54:37 AM
*Big Update*

I finally put the lists to spreadsheet and html format. I don't have them hosted for direct viewing currently, but they can be downloaded here:   The file size is small, something like 165kb. It unpacks to about 6.9mb and includes the 89 Coupe, 90 Coupe, and 90 TSTE list in both spreadsheet and html formats. All of the lists are technically incomplete, but they're far more complete than you will likely ever see.  There are supposed to be 751 1989 coupes, 2,749 1990 coupes, and 1,000 Turbo STE sedans. Those numbers are stated by the Pontiac Historical Society and Compnine also listed the exact same numbers. The totals I ended up at are 734 for the 1989 coupes, 2,740 for the 1990 coupes, and only 200 some odd Turbo STE sedans. The sedan list is so far off because I never got around to running through the list for them. I did add about 150+ cars to it during the course of doing the 1990 coupe list so at least we have that...The VIN program I used quit working before I got around to making my final pass through of the 1990 coupe list. I made it from the 200,000-277,000 range and only added one car I had missed in my previous methods. I also crossed off one car in that range that I had accidentally listed that was not real. Considering I only came up with one car in that large range, I kinda doubt I would have ever produced the other supposed 9 cars made from 277,000 to about 306,XXX.

I need to thank a few people below for their help with this.

Skitchin - Huge thanks to him for automating the process and literally knocking months or even years off of this project.

turbo-v-sick  - Thanks for doing all the leg work on the  1989 coupe list! He has also dug up tons of history and photos on these cars that we might not have ever found without him.

ManicMechanic - Thanks for helping with the VIN project and constantly posting pictures and information on these cars making it easier for me to document them. I wouldn't have come across a fraction of the ones you do because I wasn't aware of half of those auction, salvage, etc. sites until you brought them to my attention.

I'm probably forgetting some people here, but thanks to anyone that helped in any way, big or small!

I wanted to turn in the list in a much more complete format but unfortunately it didn't turn out that way. Too bad compnine did away with the several free vin checks per day when my list was still in its infancy. Those were handy in filling out the color and option info on these cars. Eventually I would like to contact them about getting a custom account and have several people help go through and document the vins. That will not be any time soon though. I'm tired of looking at those numbers for now. :P  I will be lightly modifying the list over time. I have some extra little blurbs of information on some cars I will include in a text document alongside it later. I also want to go through all my old car photos and pull any TGP ones that I documented by vin to upload to a directory to accompany the list. Don't hold your breath on either of those things as it will be quite a while before I get around to them..

I also edited the first post on page 1 with a duplicate of this post for those that stumble across the thread when searching later. By that time, hopefully it will be hosted somewhere here on the w-body page.

Edit: I always forget something. The numbers there by each car are to be taken with a grain of salt. I don't have enough information to say whether they were built in sequence and the case of the missing cars makes those irrelevant as well. The 1990 list up to vins with 277K could potentially be correct numbers if they were built in sequence. I would like more people to report their build dates, preferably with photos of the stickers. Some of the color, option, etc information could be incorrect as well. Plenty of it was owner supplied and I could not verify it with compnine no longer available. If you have any corrections to things there, see any duplicate numbers, or whatever, please shoot me a message and I'll get around to correcting it when I can.
Download link(only good for 30 days). I suggest everyone save a copy so that we can all share it around with other owners later until I can get it hosted somewhere online.

I would not think the lack of boost until the pedal is so far down would be accumulator related. I've had a bad one before and besides longer run time and more frequent running the system acted like normal. Now I do not know how discharged the old accumulator was because I did not have a pm3 brake pressure gauge to test it back then.

Which of the warning lights are lit on your car and do you have a scan tool to pull the codes related to them?

I have the factory manual and a PMIII training manual. What specifically are you dealing with? Note that if you post on w-body.com you're likely to get more replies in general. I often forget to login over here since the board is so slow these days.

Where are those pics at?  ;)  Congrats on finding one of the rarer ones.

These cars always have somewhat foamy fluid after depressurizing the unit, that's normal.

If you think a vacuum brake swap is too involved check out the W-body board and search the brake section for posts by "shurup." He did a vacuum brake swap without having to remove the dash. What he did was cut up a firewall plate from a vacuum brake car and used the portion of it where the booster locks into place on his car along with drilling a hole in his original firewall + fabricating new brake lines. If you can find a car with rust free lines in the junkyard, you could save yourself some time on not having to make new brake lines. If you can't locate that post, let me know and I'll link you to it.

You mind PM'ing or posting the vin(just the last six digits would be fine) for the one w/ the Gray interior.  In recent months, I've started making folders for each TGP I come across and I save pictures of them along with the vins for reference. Eventually when I'm finished with the TGP list(s), I would like to make it so that each VIN links to photos if I have them. I'm sure someone way down the line that ends up with one of these cars would appreciate some history on them.

Hey Matt, I am getting an error saying that the attachment directory isn't writable.

Also, I am fairly active on W-Body.

I'll relay the message to Luke. I noticed the attachments didn't work quite a while back. In the meantime, I suggest uploading images to imgur.  They'll stay hosted for quite a long time and allow direct linking. You don't have to sign up for the site, just upload in any image format, then paste the links here.  ;)

The scans are gone and the hard drive I had them downloaded to crashed on me. I hate to ask but could you please upload again? Thanks.

Do you still need the procedure?

PS: Some of you should post @ w-body. To be honest, I forget to check the board over here that often because of the periods of inactivity it has. There's a lot more traffic on the other board so things will get answered faster there.

Got the injectors in, didn't really fix anything. But did narrow things down a little, I think. It's draining fuel back into the tank just minutes after shutting it down, leading me to also assume the hard first starts are for directly related. New injectors eliminated the risk of injector leakage, though there is a also a new pressure regulator.

We're thinkin the lack of power and misfire is due to some fuel going right back down to the tank, the psi is only around 30. Question is, where is the anti drain back located on a TGP? In the pump, in the regulator? If so, they've both been changed.

Couldn't help but notice a round aluminum drum coming straight off what I believe to be my return line, just off the fuel rail. Any idea what this is because I can't find anything on it, and I'm wondering if that's playing part. But you can hear fuel returning to the tank.

The fuel pump contains the check valve or anti drain as you've called it. Did you replace the fuel pump recently or prior to this issue? If the injectors are not leaking and the FPR isn't, then your pump has to be the source of the pressure bleed-off. What pump did you replace it with? It wouldn't too much of a stretch to have a bad pump right out of the box if it was a cheaper quality unit.  Did you replace the pulsator when you did the pump or did you re-use it...or did you throw it away and use a piece of fuel grade hose in its place? That pulsator or fuel hose from the pump to the fuel supply line on the sending unit is another source of a possible leak. If you reused the pulsator, I think it's safe to say it is leaking and your fuel pump(s) were probably fine. To check the pulsator, they tell you to "shake" it and if you hear fuel sloshing inside of it, it is bad.

That little cylindrical aluminum piece on the rail is a dampener, similar in function to the pulsator in the tank. It's there to cut down on noise and smooth out fuel delivery. If it's not leaking externally which would be very obvious, there's no real issue it can cause.

Welcome back.

For hood louvers, the guy in this ad might be worth contacting if he still has them.: http://denver.craigslist.org/pts/4719103161.html

I don't recall anyone here being from Alberta. There's only a handful of Canadian members I can remember and I think they're all located a long distance from you.

What are you trying to re-wire?

I'm late to the party, but I'm assuming he might be looking at the TGP in NY that had a "small dash" fire.

Agreed.  I check the forum at least once a day.  It's a surprise to find anything new.  I have been doing a little here and there on mine, hopefully I will be doing more this spring.  I'll post some.  I am more active on the W-Body forum.  Seems like no one would notice if I posted here.  :-(

All of us generally post on w-body as well. Honestly it would be ideal if this would could be merged w/ the other and have all the info carry over to the TGP section there, but I'm not sure that's possible.

w-body  screwed my password up years ago... and they didnt seem familiar with tgps anyway... mostly 3800 guys.   We need to keep TGP modding alive.... share mods, how 2s , safety tips , threads , part numbers ect...

Is your name over there the same as here? I can resolve your password issue soon as you let me know.  ;)

There are several more on ebay at the moment if you search the Kent Moore part number. Appears to be some minor differences in some of them.

edit: Instead of a separate thread, I'll throw this in as well.

This is the socket for the PMIII pressure switch. Another handy tool to have for these. Several of these on there at the moment as well.

Half-decade bump.  ;)

TGP post card:

Grand Illusion 305hp/5spd TGP concept car article(already posted but I believe these are larger in size and they don't have "stolen from turbograndprix.com written on them. ) I purposely left a little overlap on the off chance that someone here wanted to crop and combine the photos to try to form one seamless one.
